Description

Built in the early 30s, the Orkan -class of destroyers (named after winds and storms) was an attempt to create a multi-purpose attack craft that could take on their given assignment of surface torpedo strikes, but also act as escorts and general patrol vessels.

To that end, they were constructed to be larger, with more fuel and powerful engines. Torpedo tubes were now formed into compact batteries of two three-tube complexes and artillery was standardized into 128mm weapons which could engae surface targets with rapid fire and even aircraft. Early aircraft were neither fast nor especially maneuverable, so the open, shielded mounts sufficed. Supported by 88mm guns and 20mm machine weapons, Orkan-class destroyers were powerful jack-of-all-trades.

Aircraft technologie, however, advanced rapidly and the fast attack craft of the most possible enemy, the Khante, were time and again updated and grew from nuisances into powerful enemies.

The Orkan-class was also updated to keep pace with the new threats. Main weaponry was replaced by new, fully-enclosed mounts and the older AAA updated with newer, smaller and quicker-firing weapons.

Since two dozen were built over the time, these ships continued to play vital roles in both the Morovian campaign and the Great Wars afterwards.

Many were given to Morovia later in the war and there they continued to serve well into the seventies.
