Achissa
The desolate, red world of Achissa is the homeworld of the rachis. It is the forth planet around the star Krvomimno, in the Outer Arm, or Norma, of the Milky Way. It orbits within the habitable zone of the star, but is far from a habitable, pleasant world even for its native life. With just over 28% of it covered in water, most of Achissa's surface is a desolate waste of red, rocky deserts and canyons, reflecting a fairy recent past when the planet had considerable more water coverage. Those days are, however, long gone, mostly due to the planet having lost its magnetic field due to its old age and fairy low mass for an otherwise large planet, which in turn allowed the solar wind of the aging star to blow away the hydrosphere. Combined with the increase in radiation and the heat as the habitable zone moved with the star brightening, life on Achissa started to get more and more harsh. Today, after many millions of years of global environmental collapse, Achissa's biosphere is but a shadow of its former self, and with the star continuing to get closer and closer to its red giant phase, it is bound to get only worse.
Even despite this, Achissa has spawned a sapient species of its own, the rachis, who in order to avoid the blistering heatwaves and radiation, have moved most of their civilization underground. Vast networks of caverns crisscross the planets crust, a reminder of its more geological active days, and provide the perfect sanctuary from the nearly uninhabitable surface. Massive collections of cities have arisen in these caverns, which host the majority of the rachis population. The only surface city is Searrak, the capital and holy city of the Rachis Republic and its state enforced religion, the Brehen.
Constructed several thousand years ago in memory of the many millions who died fighting for the freedom of the rachis from enslavement at the hands of an alien race, Searrak main attraction is the Spire of Heaven, a massive, three kilometers tall spire, adorned with tens of thousands of engravings depicting key moments of rachis history, some big enough to be seen with only a binocular, starting with the nomadic days at the bottom all the way to the final battle against the heathens who opposed the Brehen in the Thousand Year Schism War at the very top. As the rachis are staunchly xenophobic, they have allowed very few aliens to come to their planet, and as such very few non rachis have ever seen the Spire with their own hands, but even so it is a symbol known through the galaxy representing the Rachis Republic and its people.
