Chapter 5 - The Tale of Cthulhu

“Oh my god, is it really you!?” Siss yelled.

“Yes, it’s me!” Envy said as she went to hug her lost friend. “I thought I lost you! Wait, do you have any memory of what happened back at the mansion?”

No, the last thing I remember is getting hit in the face with a giant stone hand.” Siss said. “And then I-”

“You know what, explain everything to me when we get out of this rain.” Envy interrupted as the rain grew worse. “Can you get up?”

“I think I can.” Siss said as she tried to stand up. “I just- Owww!...Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!” She yelped as Envy put her arm on her shoulders as she trembled.

“You’re sure you can walk? I can carry you.” Envy asked.

“I’m fine.” Siss said as she groaned. “I just….twisted my ankle on a rock or something.” Envy chuckled.

“I’m glad to see you again.” she said. Just then, the townspeople showed up with umbrellas in their hands and found the two girls.

“There you are!” Andrew said. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you!”

“Andrew! Guys!” Envy shouted in glee.

“Who's the stranger next to you?” Dolgrim asked.

“No time to explain!” Envy said. “We need to take her with us! She’s hurt!” When they made it back to the house, Holly healed Envy and Siss. Envy then introduced everyone to Siss, and Siss explained everything.

“When the sandstorm finally ended, I decided to take everything I could, and leave the desert.” Siss explained. “I looked at the moon, and it was blood red. It was spooky. After walking for hours, I finally reached the forest. That’s when I saw Envy, about to be devoured by this giant eyeball with a mouth. I rushed in to help. As it chased after me, I accidentally tripped over something, twisting my ankle. Envy killed it before it could eat me instead. I woke up, Envy found me, and here we are now.”

“Andrew, that giant eyeball. What was that?” Envy asked.

“That eyeball?” Andrew said. “That was the Eye of Cthulhu. A possessed eye that has been haunting this land for ages.”

“The Eye of who?” Siss asked.

“Who’s Cthulhu?” Envy asked. Andrew sighed.

“Let me tell you a story.” He said. “Long ago when the world was new, all was peaceful. But one day, the squid-like demon, Cthulhu, and his brother arrived. The world then fell into chaos. But then, a race known as the dryads, fought back. Eventually, Cthulhu was defeated, and lost both his eye, and his brain. His brother, on the other hand, retreated, but that cost him his legs. Peace was brought back to the world, but not for long. At the area where Cthulhu’s brother’ legs were, they disintegrated into the earth, and corrupted the land around them into a disease-like, purple darkness known as the corruption. At the area where Cthulhu’s corpse lies to this day however, his blood infected the land around it into a blood red wasteland known as the crimson. The dryads, one by one, began to vanish without a trace. Making what this world is known today as, Cthuland.”

“That eye belonged to some eldritch monster?” Envy asked.

“Yes.” Andrew said.

“That makes sense, I guess.” Envy said.

“Andrew, that’s just a legend.” Akbar said.

“Legend or not, it did happen!” Andrew said.

“Yeah, it can’t be a legend.” Envy said.

“What makes you say that?” Akbar asked.

“Yesterday, I was exploring further west, and I came across this infected-looking.” Envy explained. “The grass, the rocks, everything was purple. It also smelled bad.” She then turned to Andrew. “Andrew, was that-”

“The Corruption? Yes, Envy." Andrew immediately responded.

"Of course it is the Corruption." Akbar said. "We know both it and the Crimson exist."

"But we don't exactly know their history." Dolgrim said. "We've just been told legends, stories."

“I don’t know. Something tells me that Andrew is telling the truth, which reminds me.” Envy said. “I got this from the Eye of Cthulhu!” She pulled out the Eye of Cthulhu treasure bag, and showed it to everyone.

“That’s the Eye of Cthulhu’s treasure bag, Envy!” Andrew said. “Open it!” Envy opened the bag, and she got a whole bunch of things. Inside were lesser healing potions, a pair of binoculars, the shield of cthulhu, the Eye of Cthulhu trophy, the Eye of Cthulhu relic, 0x33’s aviators, a suspicious grinning eye, 14 gold coins, and 100 silver coins.

“Wow!” Siss said in amazement. “Look at all this stuff!” Envy noticed the shield and picked it up.

“Look at this shield!” Envy said. “It looks so cool!”

“Not only that it looks cool and increases your defense, Envy,” Andrew said, “but it allows you to dash attack.”

“That’s it. This shield is mine.” Envy said. She also picked up the aviators and the binoculars. She noticed the suspicious grinning eye, and it kinda creeped her out. “Hey Siss, you want this?” she asked.

“Sure, I’ll take it.” Siss replied.

“Wait, you don’t know how to open your inventory!” Envy cried.

“My what?” Siss said in confusion.

“We have an inventory system of some kind.” Envy said. “Andrew taught me how it works.”

“Ok. So, how do I open this ‘inventory’ thing anyways?” Siss asked.

“Don’t worry, it’s easy.” Andrew said. “All you have to do is focus on your soul and open it.” Siss did so, and was shocked.

“Whoa!” Siss said in amazement. “I had no idea this was a possibility!”

“Siss, what do you see?” Envy asked.

“I see my finch staff, the pickaxe and axe I found, a bunch of cacti from the desert, that suspicious grinning eye you gave me, and my pharaoh outfit from the pyramid I stayed in.” Siss said. “Wait. If I knew I knew about this, I could’ve taken everything in the pyramid with me!”

“I mean, we can try to go back for it.” Envy said. “But, we may have to wait until tomorrow. The weather is currently not safe for travel. So, get comfortable.” Later during the evening, Envy couldn’t sleep because of the storm outside. As she laid in her bed, she remembered that chill she felt go down her spine after breaking that shadow orb back in the chasm. She then felt the urge to look inside the bag again. When she opened the bag, she noticed something glowing inside of it that she missed. Inside were arrows, some bizarre looking seeds, and two types of glowing metal ore. One was purple, and the other was red. She was curious what all this was, but she was too tired to think about it. Eventually, she fell asleep.
