Description I've been putting off this one for a very long time, so I think it's about time that I do the long-overdue and much anticipated Animation Unknown review on Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero. I have no idea why, but there's quite a lot of people who actually really hate this show. Why? We'll get into why this show is so extremely great in a minute but for now: this is the penultimate review of Animation Unknown Week. Before we get into the review proper, I'd like to apologize for the scheduling error here and not doing the Sanjay & Craig AU I said I'd do. This has been a very difficult week having to rewrite all my old reviews and I wanted the week to go out a bit more positive. That being said, let's talk about Penn Zero:

Plot- The plot is straight-forward enough, even though we don't get a pilot and don't have a full origin story until near the end of the first season (and since this was greenlit for Season 2, that's why it has the ongoing + symbol). Penn Zero, and his friends Boone and Sashi, are selected to be "part-time heroes," meaning that they enter into other dimensions and save the world however the mission says they have to. Meanwhile, they have to contend with Rippen and his henchman Larry, a Part-Time Villain, who will become a full-time villain if he wins just one mission and defeats the good guys. Why were they selected to be heroes? Well, as we learn later (don't worry about spoilers here, it's part of the origin story), Penn's parents were actually full-time heroes who were accidentally sent to "The Most Dangerous World Imaginable" with no way of getting back and so each new mission is essentially training in hopes that they might find a way for Penn to be reunited with his parents.
Characters- The characters here are really damn good. Penn, obviously, assumes the role of the hero, Sashi is the sidekick (which she chose for herself since it would mean she'd get to do all the kicking and punching and fighting), and Boone is...surprisingly, the Wise Man, a role which, at first, seems like an odd fit but he can usually pull through in a pinch when he has to. It's also kinda bizarre how--despite in the other realities--Rippen is the leader and Larry is his henchman, Larry is actually the school's principal and Rippen is an art teacher who constantly resents the fact Larry is his boss (especially considering how Larry sucks at being as evil, and is so incompetent he's usually a big factor in why they lose most of the time). There's also the characters in the various worlds they visit who tend to be pretty enjoyable and some like Sharif Scaly-Briggs even have their own stories.
Enjoyment- This is a very enjoyable, very fun, and very entertaining series that makes good use of genre-savvy humor. Clearly, the creators know exactly what they're doing and enjoy it. Plus, to make things even better, it turns out that this series got a second season (and, even better, Pickle & Peanut is most likely cancelled on on hiatus with no news as of this writing that it was renewed for another season), and it promises for even bigger stuff to happen.
Creativity- I can't even tell you how much originality and creativity went into this series, just from all the unique and amazing worlds they visit: a Western where livestock and horses are replaced by dinosaurs, Top Gun with dragons (with some dragons having names like Renegade and Blaze while others have cat names like Cupcake or Mittens), an alien game show to determine the fate of Earth (yeah, I know Jimmy Neutron did that first, but this is different), a world of clown cops, and this is ALL just Season 1 alone!Β
Execution- Penn Zero is clever, funny, action-packed, entertaining, and most definitely worth a watch. I can't think of any reason you shouldn't be watching this right now unless you don't have Disney XD. Though, if you're reading this review, you clearly have access to the Internet so I insist on supporting these creators anyway that you can and helping to show Disney that we want more Penn Zero and Star vs. FoE and far, FAR less Pickle & Peanut.

Final Score: Plot (6), Characters (7), Enjoyment (8), Creativity (9), Execution (8)= 38 + Extra Credit (1/2 Star for overhated status)= 40 (Bronze Rank)

This show totally needs more love; it's also hard to understand why people hate it.

I don't know why either. We still don't have a date for season 2 either.Β

Such is quite a shame, it's almost as though the network doesn't care about it.

IKR? At least Disney XD has SOME things to keep them afloat like Yo-Kai Watch, Star vs. FoE, though they also had Xiaolin Chronicles, the spin-off/sequel/reboot that even THEY didn't know what it was and probably shouldn't have been, and Pokemon Sun and Moon, which completely misses the entire point (but hopefully isn't as bad as B&W).Β

Not as bad as Cartoon Network airing NOTHING BUT TEEN FUCKING TITANS GO ALL THANKSGIVING WEEKEND!!!!!! Even if TTG was a good show, that just seems unfair to their other, very excellent series.

Quite indeed, friend. It honestly begs the question of why they did it in the first place, unless they were trying to get more people to like the show, but that usually doesn't work for very obvious reasons.

I can honestly say that this is my most favorite cartoon show out of all the other known cartoons of today. The only ones that match this show here would be Cartoon Networks Steven Universe and Nickelodeon's recent show, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.

On the case of Penn Zero here, it's actually quite sad that a lot of people hate this show. From what i've seen of the reviews here during the past year since the show has been on, most if not all of the people who hate it said that the reason they don't like the show is because of it's design. Or more specifically, they hate how the characters look (ex. they find Penn Zero's hair ugly). But that's just one of the many reasons people don't like the show.

Doesn't dissuade me from watching it. It's their dumba** opinions.Β

I totally agree; I LOVE this series and I think it's easily one of the greatest and funniest shows Disney XD has ever put out. I'm glad that it's getting a well-deserved second season, I'm glad Pickle & Peanut wasn't renewed, I'm glad that Star is getting 2 more seasons, and I'm really glad we're also getting more Steven Universe. Hell, the series I'm currently writing I plan to basically turn into an adult cross between Teen Titans (the real one, not whatever the fuck Go! is supposed to be) and Steven Universe; also, speaking of Miraculous, I actually do have a review of that as well:Β Anime Unknown #3- Miraculous Ladybug

Same here, dude. Hell, Penn Zero is THE SOLE REASON why i still watch cartoons to this day. If not for this show, i would have not watch shows of todays generation and beyond forever.Β

Like, legit not watch cartoons anymore or even appreciate them in the slightest...

Hey, according to TTG's Return of Slade, apparently when you hit 13 there's just a magic switch that goes off in your brain and erases everything from your childhood and you just instantly hate animation in all forms. Okay, they don't LITERALLY say that but they do basically just say that anyone who still holds on to their childhood and appreciates good cartoons like Over the Garden Wall, Steven Universe, or this are just a bunch of losers. Guess what; I'll take Sofia the First over Teen Titans go ANY TIME, EVERY TIME! Btw, I'M 22.

But yeah, i wouldn't mind being called a loser. Shit, i'll be a "loser" just for liking shows like this and Steven Universe.

i personally think it's underrated. i remember when i first saw it a few years back and people hated it because it was "ugly" or something. it was soo weird. i thought the animation was simple enough that when they went to new worlds, they looked great! not to mention it's another show from where i like the villain as much as the heroes. not to say i dislike the heroes, you just feel sympathy for them. one just wants to try and be the best he can be and the other is just a hopeless henchmen, but not like an idiot or one note henchmen. i really like this show, but~ even with Gravity Falls done with, i still like Star vs and WOY (for the time being. stupid Disney cancelling shit to soon) alittle bit more.

KingZanderSanchez-i In reply to captainryno [2016-03-11 08:23:06 +0000 UTC]

Understandable; Star & Penn Zero are kinda tied for me. Plus, Disney going to build up a LOT of bad karma for scorning Craig McCraken. This isn't just some noname, fresh outta first year animation Kickstarter wannabe; we're talking about an animation legend, on par with Genddy Tartokowski for helping to construct the building blocks of Cartoon Network and a masterful creator in his own right.

yay! and WOY was such a great show, pretty much hitting the head with good jokes and having great animation. it better be one hell of a new show they made him make. i swear, if it's another Pickle and Peanut show, Disney fucked it all up.

Well, were apparently getting a new series after this called Milo Murphy's Law (don't know a lot about it but it's apparently in the same universe as Phineas & Ferb and the title character is played by, of all people, WEIRD AL!!!!). I swear, once Sanchez Chronicles hits mainstream, I WILL find a way to work with Weird Al; he just seems like the most fun guy to hang out with.Β

Well, this show isn't really obscure I say, but it's completely underrated. I actually ignored it myself until recently, but I started watching it last week and now I can easily say that, since Gravity Falls is over, this my favorite currently airing Disney XD cartoon.
I have no clue how anyone can hate this, the creativity is fantastic, the characters are engaging and there are very few cartoons that manage to make me laugh more (and this show often does it in really clever ways).
Great review, you explained pretty much every reason why I love this cartoon so much.

Yeah, what a lot of people seem to forget is that--despite the title being Animation UNKNOWN--I don't just cover the obscure but the underrated, overhated, and overlooked. I heard that, apparently, there are people out there who hate this series. I don't know how or why, but I made this in response to all four of them.

IKR, I'm glad that it's getting a well-deserved Season 2, unlike TTG's Season 3. It's not sticking around because it's popular and people like it; it's sticking around because it's cheap, cost effective, and played fourteen times a day. When you have a channel that only has three shows and you play one show 13 hours a day, seven days a week, that doesn't make it a popular show it just means you're not airing anything else. I'm just finishing marathoning the second half of Season 1, while I watch this movie I need to review and hope to record the audio by Friday.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NewChumm In reply to KingZanderSanchez-i [2016-03-11 02:49:03 +0000 UTC]

I'm halfway through. I agree, this season 2 is really deserved. And this show looks like it might be actually quite expensive, the animation is extremely detailed and there are those different character designs every week.
I agree with TTG, the network probably keeps it because well, it's cheap to make but I honestly do think that the show is somewhat popular (obviously this awful in your face advertising has helped tho). Young kids tend to love it, because the humor is simple and easy to get.... the problem is that the show sucks.

That's a big part of it. If Twilight has proved anything, the one thing worse than having a terrible work is an even worse fanbase. Even when you do have decent, sane people who unironically enjoy the series (for whatever reason) they're automatically lumped in with the total ass-backwards psychos who flip the fuck out over ANYONE pointing out the smallest flaw and threaten to kill someone for saying the show is anything less than genius or just hurl hate speech and bile because, apparently, the way to win an argument now is to just cover your opponent in enough shit to the point they aren't visible and you can't hear their side of the story. That'll teach THEM to have a different opinion!Β
