~Usa-pyon requested a tutorial on how I drew my guidelines to begin my pictures.

Its just some simple little sketches so hope they're helpful to you guys.

For anyone just stumbling on this there are more tutorials in my gallery, human figure, hands, feet, facial expressions and clothes~

I've always had a hard time with making characters look like they are moving (or fitting proper porpotions onto certian size paper) So my questions are these:

How do you make a character look like they are in motion?
How do I put in proper porportions into characters on paper that isn't very large (Without losing ddetails)
How do you put two characters together? (I know you showed it, but is there anything else you do?)
And do you already have tutorials that tell this?

Thanks!

I don't have tutorials on those things.

How do you make a character look like they are in motion?
Okay first you gotta get the pose right, but after that its all down to the detail you add (in animation it's called secondary action) Like; the clothes moving, the hair also, eg. If a character is stepping forward, on the leg that moves forward the trousers are going to be pressed to the shin and loose at the back. If he's wearing a shirt it could be flapping behind and the hair would be getting blown back in the breeze.

All these things give the impression of movement so the brain decides that if these things are happening then the character *must* be moving. It helps to draw lightly and not too dark because drawing dark can make it very stiff and unmovable.

How do I put in proper porportions into characters on paper that isn't very large (Without losing ddetails)

Unfortunately if you're reducing the size you're going to lose out on detail. To keep the loss to a minimun change what you're drawing with. You can buy a O.3 mechanical pencil and X''DD the lead is very fine, so fine you have to be very careful the pressure you put on it cuz it snaps a lot.

Start as normal and make your guidelines fit on the page. Usually my drawings are pretty small. They would take up half a printer page. I just use mechanical pencils cause you always have a nice sharp tip.

How do you put two characters together? (I know you showed it, but is there anything else you do?)

Well if you're struggling to tell your skeletons apart, another method would be to use a different colour for each person, just draw lightly so they'll be easier to erase, I think Staedtler do some blue and red pencils that can be erased (I have brown, blue and green lead for my mechanical pencil, brand is staedtler)

Definitely switch to a mechanical pencil if you use normal ones. I'm using a 0.5 with HB lead in it at the moment.
Anything you want me to clarify from that?

thanks for the guides, it enlighten me on how you use lines for proportion (e.g. to make sure the girl's armpit is equal), really simple but indispensable

I draw shapes and stuff for guidelines too!

Mine poses and people just end up crap though xD;

But I guess I just have to practise, practise, practise!

I shall also have a look at your other tutorials, because I think I need them ~ ~

yeah I have a question...

Why are you so awesome? lol I always have so much trouble with interacting poses. But I think I've gotten a bit of a grasp from your sketches.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kitten-chan In reply to suburbian-kat [2009-07-29 14:12:29 +0000 UTC]

LOL X''DD
Another little thing that might help with interaction is draw your initial guide in 2 different colours.

Easy in digital, but with pencils, Crayola do a colouring pencil you can erase and just draw it lightly. Very close poses can just become a muddle.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

suburbian-kat In reply to kitten-chan [2009-07-30 11:08:37 +0000 UTC]

Hmm okay. I know sometimes sketches can look like tentacle beasts (though they can be fun once in a while) but I'll have to try the multicoloured lines.

I know I tried some of those erasable coloured pencils but they don't seem that erasable.

I think the main problem with me is proportions which, sadly, can only be fixed by practice lol

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kitten-chan In reply to suburbian-kat [2009-07-30 15:01:41 +0000 UTC]

I always find with those that certain colours are....
Also! certain erasers are better than others. I've alwats loved 'Milan' erasers..tho Im not sure how easy those are to get for you. The erasers i use atm are from an asian store and are fantastic.

Hmmmm I'm *trying* to remember what brand my animation pencil was....I think it was Staedtler...(its in ireland...and im not) It's a blue 'lead' and if you draw light it erases quite well. Drawing lightly on the page is always a good idea because then when youre all set you can darken.

Guh...sorry for the big confused spiel right there X''DD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

suburbian-kat In reply to kitten-chan [2009-07-30 22:01:36 +0000 UTC]

I...think...I understand lol

and yeah, I usually go for the better erasers at our local art shop. It's crazy the awesome things you find in asian stores, though I can't think any of ours having sweet erasers.

I did pick up a blue lead pencil (cause it was on sale) and I couldn't really see the lines and it was even worse than usual X.x I think I'll stick with "normal" pencils and my tablet.

Awesome. Thanks so much for this. There are a lot of helpful tutorials out there, but mostly for the fine details and effects once the drawing is already underway. This is wonderful for those of us who tend to have the most trouble sketching out the main idea.
