This is really helpful for fixing up my method. I didn't merge much or tone my shadows back then. good to know me taking eons to clean isnt just a me thing ^v^

Can there be highlights in shadows?

Shadows are caused by light not being able to pass a certain opaque object. Highlights are caused by intense lights. So no. The only exception you might have noticed, is like a background highlight. That there is a light coming around the back of the character and lighting up the outer outline very finely. This will be right next to the shadows.
