Description IMPORTANT:
For the love of God, plz check out my original work! There isn't much (yet), but at least I worked on my actual drawings for more than 5 minutes!

Don Bluth was (and still is) one of the best animators, character designers and animation directors in the history of ever.

Okay, 4 of his films in the 90's were bad. He actually wanted his credit removed from one of them, he hated the final result so much.

But...

Banjo The Woodpile Cat
The Secret of N.I.M.H.
An American Tail
The Land Before Time
All Dogs Go To Heaven
Anastasia
Titan AE

... were great works of 4®†. Even Bartok The Magnificent was decent.

P.S. Since you really like this piece of crap so much, I updated it a little bit.

Don Bluth was like MGMs version of Walt Disney (maybe that's why Anastasia had that disney feel to it). I love some of the films he made (I say some because I haven't seen all of them) and my all time faves are: NIMH, Anastasia, RockaDoodle, Land Before Time, ADGTH, and Banjo The Woodpile Cat. I also have Troll in Central Park but I didn't watch it all that much (even if it did have the guy that voiced Itchy and Fagan). I have also watched American Tail but it's been so long since I've seen the first movie @.@

When asked by IGN "what film turned out not as good as you planned", Bluth and Goldman gave different answers. Gary said Troll or Pebble, while Don said Rock-a-doodle.

Yes, that's right! You like a film its own creator looks down upon.

Well, let's see how this "genius" makes another movie before... you know...

Teaching animation is VERY important, but I think one more movie should be made.

Yeah, I agree.

Pity, he hasn't done much since Titan AE, but I'm interested that he's now educating us with animation tutorials. That has to be the best thing a future artist would love to study,(aka) me and my best friend and schoolmate, Shaury Miranda.

Read the short tie-in novels first. Since the story and the fictional universe ended up too big for one movie, two books were published, telling the story of the 2 mains. They explain a great deal about their world, technology, and some of the characters' motivations.

But my favorite Don Bluth movie is All Dogs Go To Heaven. Seriously, I wish more animated movies like that where made nowadays, but sadly there are more scoccermoms nowadays.

I've seen some of your art. I am impressed with it. Anyways somebody made a video about the whole works of Don Bluth. Rather interesting video to look at as well. [link]

Oh and I heard somewhere that Don WAS considering on doing a film based on Dragon's Lair.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KlarkKentThe3rd In reply to gothinwashere [2010-10-23 01:46:36 +0000 UTC]

The project has a finished story. That's right, Dragon's Lair: The (prequel) Movie is already written.

However, Don spends most of his time today teaching animation, since he believes that's the most important thing.

He may never make the film.

But the screenplay IS already written. He said so himself.

gothinwashere In reply to KlarkKentThe3rd [2010-10-23 02:48:51 +0000 UTC]

If he's busy with that. Why doesnt he do that for a new video game of dragon's lair, and make something new for the film? I mean. It worked for ghostbusters. The ghostbusters got a video game made(And it did rather well too) and low an behold a new movie is on its way.

glad to meet another Bluth fan, and what's this about a website? I'm an aspiring animator and I'd love to hear more.

I love this picture! Where did you find it?

Interesting thing about his flops. I've heard that a lot of them involved a bunch of executive meddling. Conversely, with the Secret of N.I.M.H, arguable his best film, he had complete creative control. Could it be, that, with less henpecking from the studio executives, more of his films would have been better?

The reason no one looks at your original works is because you have so many uploads like this. Stop with these deviations and start with a hell of a lot more of your original artwork.

Making animated movies, yes.
Choosing his investors in said movies, no.

Seriously, a main reason four of his films in the 90s were so poorly produced was because he was an independent filmmaker and anyone who would give him money wanted him to do Disney's style. If you notice, NIMH, the one film where he had complete creative control, was one of his best, and upon a second viewing, I couldn't believe that the first ADGTH nearly made me cry, and I think that, too, was mostly independently produced. Sadly, he's in semi-retirement and, due to his troubled experiences as a filmmaker, he doesn't sound like he's too eager to come back. At least we have the DVDs to comfort us.

Have you ever seen his music video for "Mary" by Scissor Sisters? It's really cool!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KlarkKentThe3rd In reply to Gabe-S-Art [2010-06-18 06:10:57 +0000 UTC]

IDC (ai dawnt kare) about Mary.

Don is currently animating a short film by himself (taken from a 2009 interview). The Dragon's Lair movie WILL be made, they are now choosing a company to finance it.

And he is teaching animation now. His site is great, with a nice forum. BTW, he always said "fight for what you love". In other words, do nawt ask what the animation industry can do for you, but what YOU can do for the animation industry. He wants to teach (or at least oversee the teaching of) a new generation of animators to continue his work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gabe-S-Art In reply to KlarkKentThe3rd [2010-06-18 14:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I've seen his site, it looks awesome! I also have his "Art of Animation Drawing" book, which is awesome too. I heard mixed things about the Dragon's Lair movie, but if what you're saying is true and he's doing it independently, than I have high hopes for it! Never played the games, but it's DON BLUTH WORKING INDEPENDENTLY!!!!! (wow, that was dorky, lol)

I have heard a lot of stuff he's said about not letting the industry control you, and again, I find it ironic how that's sort of what killed his career. From what I read, he also had too many of the financiers taking creative control of his stuff, mainly because he kept asking for help in the story department, as he has admitted he is not a great storyteller. He'd get way too many people telling him how to tell a story, so they'd be halfway through production before they even finished the script, resulting in a huge clusterfuck of unfinished work thrown together towards the end of production. If anything, I thought Titan AE was his best post-80s work (Anastasia was ok, IMO)

I also saw he contributed to this Saudi Arabian film that I keep trying to find clips of.
