This little tutorial illustrates the basic steps and techniques used when digitally painting with Photoshop.This is not an in-depth tutorial on how to paint 'something-something' like a pro (a pro I am not
Some of the biggest problems I had while starting to paint is answered here and if you have more questions, feel free to ask.
Tools:
Photoshop (any version) - mine is CS2, but I still recommend Photoshop 7.
Tablet (any brand) - inutos 2 (or 3)

You artisty types always make it look so simple, yet I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler. Great log of your progress with this one, I love the picture.

You give me too much credit -- I can't draw a straight line without the 'line tool' in photoshop.

do you use multiple layers? wait i think ive asked you that before.. but i cant remember the answer..
im working on an elf sitting on a cliff jutting out over some sort of BG, i havent gotten that far yet

For this one, I start off with one layer for everything.
When I make changes, I'll make a new transparent layer and use the color picker to select colors and modify the painting -- if I like the changes, I'll merge the layers together.
If I see more flaws, I'll make another layer and do changes again the same way.
But if it's a complex painting, then I might make a background layer and a different layer for each subject.

Cool! I always shy away from the hard brush, sad but true. I really need to work it into more of my paintings. *nodnod* Anyway, great step-by-step. I'm sure it'll help a lot of people.

I love the hard brush - great when set to scatter and pressure-sensitive opacity.
