Description
I don't usually do "Draw my OC" contests, if only because my own OCs barely get enough attention, but the fact that KitsMits has commented at various times on how much easier drawing short hair would be (as opposed to Kaiya's waist-length mane) and how giving Kaiya tattoos might have been cool, this idea I had proved irresistible. So, here's KitsMits' Kaiya, a character she created for her own stories based in the universe of Naruto, with some new ink, a little more metal, and a lot less hair.I have to admit, I'm really, really unfamiliar with Naruto, so I mostly relied on KM's posts and some internet searches and I can only hope I didn't make any egregious offenses to the fans. That said, this was really, really fun to do. I mean, I had almost zero creativity when it came to the tattoos, but still -- coming up with a new look for someone's character and then putting them into your own style is kind of cool.
Anyhow, most of this was my now-usual technique of laying down greys and then putting color over them, except for the tattoos themselves, which were set as "hard light" layers lest they either fade too much or force me to create a greyscale base for them alone which probably would have driven me mad. It's now one of my goals to find a good way to get tattoos to follow the value shifts of shadows and highlights without completely fading to the values the pale-ass women I draw usually have.
The background is kind of a throw-in, just because having her in a chair on a blank or basic background struck me as a bit odd. I can guarantee it could be torn apart easily enough if you wanted to, and I wouldn't stop you, but -- I'd be more interested in hearing what you think about the main subject herself. So, any comments, critiques, or advice you have is welcome, as always.
Kaiya on a normal day:
Kaiya belongs to KitsMits
Naruto belongs to... someone else. Definitely not me, that I know.

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll generally adjust the ‘value’ portion of the HSV setting to make the base color lighter or darker; I’m unable to ‘cool’ shadows by adding blue or anything like that. I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

This was the piece that brought me to your gallery (and KitsMits' too).
Total knockout piece.

Thank you, I appreciate that! Kaiya's a gorgeous character to begin with, so it was fun to provide a different take on her.

Nice work with the pose and the texture of her clothes! I realy love those tattoes, too. The character is detailed and cool ^^
The idea of the background is great, but I'm sorry that you didn't made it about that detailed as you did with the character. Mainly becaus it's surface is more than half of the picture But you did a realy nice work with the character ^^ I like it ^^
Nice work! ^^

Thank you!
I have a real weakness with backgrounds, and do need to learn how to focus on them so they get better. :-/ But I'm glad you liked it despite that!

I have the same with the backgrounds
I very like how you draw the character. I just sayed this about the background because if you do it in about the same level as you did with her it would be hard for me to choose which entry i love the best ^^ And maybe it help you if you participate in any other contest in dA or any other site

I have no idea what it is about this piece that makes me love it so much, but damn this is incredible! It looked gorgeous before I even got the chance to open it, but now that I'm looking at it up close, the way you did the leather and the general contours of the black on her outfit is legitimately boggling my mind. All of her features are beautifully proportional, the tattoos look incredible and the way you've managed to achieve that "warm loungeroom lighting" and morph what looks like a pretty dingy apartment into a cosy looking setting from just her posture is nuts. I'm in the same boat with you in that I have next-to no familiarity with Naruto, but rest assured you've made this person's fan character look bomb as hell.

And thank you again -- let me tell you, you're really making an otherwise rough week pretty damn good today/tonight.
I'll be honest -- I didn't expect Kaiya to wind up looking so hot, but the tats and stuff work for her. I'm very happy to hear that the leather and the black work well and come across as such, because I think I was wandering into the Latex neighborhood as far as highlights go, and then had to pull myself back. So knowing it wound up okay is a relief.
And the whole time I was drawing her tattoos, I kept wondering how you managed to do them over and over with your crew...

Daaaamn! Nicely done! I love the tattoos on her, and great hairstyle choice! That totally seems like decor she'd have in her apartment, too - a little totem, a comfy chair, an almost-swirl on the wall (right next to the spot that needs repair)...love it!

Thank you, I'm glad you like it! I tried to incorporate the tattoos you used before, though since you can't see her left hand I moved the one from there to her neck. And I kept her swoopy bangs, since that seemed like it could be a trademark of hers (and just darn alluring, to boot). This was really fun -- she's an awesome subject.

She is fun to draw, isn't she? And I absolutely LOVE what you did with the tattoos. Designs aren't my strong suit, and these look amazing.

I just realized I set the upload so you could only see it at 1200 pixels. I reset it so you can see it at 3000 now, which was the intended size to show off more tattoo detail, for better or worse.

I was thinking of posting a cropped version on Instagram tomorrow night -- if you'd like me to tag you in it, just 'note' me your account name. Alternatively, I can just say she belongs to KitsMits on DA.
