Description
The second model of Alliance-built starships in the NCX technology demonstrator development program was the NCX-007 through NCX-012 Territorial Defense Ship (or Destroyer-Research ship). The first of these ships was the NCX-007 U.S.S. Rickenbacker. That ship was unable to breach warp 5 for the sixty-minute period the project required and was only able to safely warp at factor 4.5 for that time duration. The test put considerable strain on the ship and she was sent back to spacedock for repair until 2153. NCX-008 U.S.S. Nordenskjold was the first U.E.S.P.A. ship to engage the Romulans in 2153 and although she was severely damaged (due to her inferior shields to that of the Romulans) she did prove that a concentrated beam of Phased-Laser energy could easily penetrate Romulan shields and armor. NCX-008 was sent back to starbase one for a full retrofit/upgrade and would become the Nordenskjold class of Cruiser. NCX-009 and NCX-010 were destroyed while defending Starbase 10 in 2154 against Romulan incursion flotillas. NCX-011 and NCX-012 were ordered to return to Starbase 01 in 2154 to be refit to the Rickenbacker class Heavy Destroyer in preparation for what the Alliance of Planets knew would be war with the Romulans.
