Description After the M-5 Computer crippled the USS Excalibur in 2268 during a war-games excercise, the USS Excalibur was towed back to Starbase One for repair.  During this repair the lessons learned from the M-5 incident, the contact with the Klingons, Romulans, Tholians, Gorn, and other alien races caused Starfleet to begin the upgrade of the Constitution class design.  The first retrofit was the Phase-I Excalibur class refit/upgrade commenced in 2268 and completed in 2269.  The Phase-I ship had improved engines (smaller and lighter than the Constitution class, but with greater output), improved shields, and the new Mark-V "Blooming" Phasers that fired a pulse of antimatter surrounded by a phaser-beam that detonated on impact with matter causing a "bloom" of destructive energy.  These phasers were a vast improvement over the Mark-IV used on the Constitution class and other ships of the era.
A new high-maneuverability system was built into the new class which used a combination of nuclear-thrusters, and graviton-manipulators to allow for considerable agility for a ship of its size.  This new ship uses neutronium instead of Rodinium for armor.

This ship was inspired by the Phase-II design created by kelso323.deviantart.com/

Kelso323's version of the Phase-II Constitution class:

kelso323.deviantart.com/art/He…

UPDATE:
I redesigned this ship to conform to the evolution of the other models I've made since I first did this one.

Hello:

I just saw your update on this ship, the background story is very nice! I am glad someone remembers the poor USS Excalibur  . But what I find most innovative are the phaser description and the maneuvering thrusters .

well, that's a nice variation of the Constitution Class, also you've classed it as 'Phase I' i also have a Phase I connie.

yea, i also have a Phase III aswell, but, i'm trying to think up a final stage for the design phases before 'Refit' i.e. Phase IV.

Phase-III sounds interesting.

Interesting design.

They remind me of the Endeavor sub-class of Constitution starship which is a Phase-I refit.

Don't know if that Connie-evolution chart/blueprint will be of help, but it never hurts to have more resources.

Quantum808 In reply to Kodai-Okuda [2018-06-12 18:19:54 +0000 UTC]

well, the nacelle wass based of an Evdevour nacelle just put to a spec nearing TMP, hence it being Phase III.

Ooh nice! Really the only thing I'd change (other than the size, that will never stop bothering me because I'm screaming internally about it) is the nacelle position.

They should be up a little higher, down a little lower, or out a little farther so the Bussards aren't blocked from the forward view

Kodai-Okuda In reply to Omega719 [2018-06-10 05:29:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

If this ship were going to be in the lineage of the USS Enterprise/Constitution class beyond Phase-I, I would agree to move the nacelles.  However, I intend this ship to be in the lineage of the Excelsior and thus the nacelles are lower (almost obstructed) in that technological line of ships.
As for the size, that's the "new normal" and I dislike it also, but I'm going with it since both STD and the Kelvin Timeline now do it.

Omega719 In reply to Kodai-Okuda [2018-06-10 05:59:43 +0000 UTC]

True, although I'd argue that the original Excelsior doesn't seem to have bussard collectors as we know them anyway since there's no difference between the forward section and the rest of the nacelle that would suggest a different function.

Eh, going to have to disagree on DIS since there's nothing in series that suggests the sizes are that massive (and what few "official" figures there are are literally a single number change away from being something reasonable. I suspect that it might have something to do with the current legal battle. Although I'm not going to press anymore there since I think we've basically based out all of our arguments in previous conversations).

Kodai-Okuda In reply to Omega719 [2018-06-10 06:14:13 +0000 UTC]

The bussard ram scoops on the Excelsior are basically non-existent until the refit which makes them much thinner, and also somewhat obstructed.

www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/…

However, the bussards do not have to have an unobstructed path since in space there is no turbulence that would be caused by the saucer so the ram scoops can suck in hydrogen quite easily I would think.

As for the size of STD's USS Discovery, Eaglemoss (the officially licensed distributor for CBS Star Trek products) has the length of the USS Discovery at 750.5 meters.  It is huge.
Trekyards did a review of the Eaglemoss model/toy which has an official size (for now).

It's just the classic rule.

Yeah, and I've always said that "official" figures are complete bunk as those are often made by marketing and not the actual designer. There's no way that she's that long in the show. Wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

And as much as I like Trekyards, I do have issues with their process at times.

Kodai-Okuda In reply to Omega719 [2018-06-10 18:11:59 +0000 UTC]

I understand.

Did you notice I changed the Warp Nacelle position?
I did so after making the decision to take this technological design tree towards a non-canon variant of the Excelsior that I really like: the Ingram.
It's bussards are not obstructed.

www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/…

I agree that technical specs in Star Trek are never set in stone, but....CBS is sticking by these numbers for now.
The Shenzhou is 423 meters long.

shop.eaglemoss.com/images/shop…

Like I said in a previous discussion with you Omega719, this is ALL because of copyright issues with Paramount.  CBS is making a completely new aesthetic for Star Trek because the rights are split between Viacom and CBS.

Omega719 In reply to Kodai-Okuda [2018-06-10 18:37:44 +0000 UTC]

I hadn't actually. For some reason that didn't come up in my feed.

Looks great!

Huh, I had completely forgotten about the Ingham variant.

Like I said, I know about them. I even did the math around those figures and found that a simple ratio change on a recent ship model announcement is all it takes to bring literally everything back to the sizes described by the artists which put the Shenzhou around the same size as a Miranda class.

Probably, hopefully everything is fixed in the near future after the legal battle which is also tying up a couple of other Star Trek projects.

Also I should probably disclose that I never trust official figures unless they can be proven in the show since this isn't the first time the "official" materials have different from portrayal in the show. I mean, the old TNG and DS9 tech manuals get hilariously bad in places.
