Description
Finally compiled enough photos to do a tutorial. Most of it is common knowledge but I hope it answers some questions. C:
If you have something you'd like to know in addition, feel free to ask them here and I'll try my best to answer.
p.s. I get asked a lot about masking fluid but no, I don't use it very often. None was used for these pictures.

This tutorial is so flipping useful Thank you so much for taking the time to create it! c:
If you plan on making any future tutorials... may I suggest maybe creating a brief tutorial on how to properly use watercolour pencils? So many people, I'm sure, would be incredibly grateful for such a tutorial. I know I would xD
Anyway, just something to consider if you ever have the time.

Uhm, could you explain more about the wet on wet method please? Thank you
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
koyamori In reply to ZiaLiaLis [2011-11-22 15:44:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, basically you wet the paper, and then use a wet brush with paint on it to paint on the wet spots. The paint will react with the water on paper in interesting ways.

a question though ~
Does the type of paper matter in terms of absorbing the colours properly? It seems like you are using a special type of paper, and this method might not work on regular printing paper, or I could be mistaken.

Aaah~~ Very belated but thanks a million dear~~;A;
As for your question, the paper absolutely plays a role in how your colour works.
I use watercolour paper; it is made especially to absorb pigments because it is 100% cotton fiber and basically grab hold of your pigments to give maximum vibrancy.
The paper is also durable enough that you can scrub the colours away so the area can be re-whitened, and when you drip water on it it may give you interesting bleeding effecs.

for watercolours in general, and for this technique especially you need thick papers. she is using watercolour paper. regular printing paper would fail.

ah, i see. I have been noticing her papers and almost all of them seem to possess a lovely quality which adds to the painting. I hope to buy paper like that haha, just to try this method.

I think I saw this on Tumblr; bookmarking it so I can save it and attempt something like this as well!
That being said, I noticed how your art is still as lovely as ever, but just..Im not sure how to explain it- a little more refined? Especially in terms of the figures ~!
I really enjoy your beautiful watercolours everytime I look at them, so its nice to get a sneak peak of the process behind it. Thank you for this!

Did you use masking fluid at all for these? if not, how did you get the egdes around your figures to be clean?

koyamori In reply to zhorla [2011-11-22 15:42:55 +0000 UTC]
I don't use masking fluid. I usually just use a small brush to paint the edges carefully.

I see, that's very cool I'm surprisied the paint doesn't leave egdes along the srtoke.

Thank you! I just recently decided that I was going to paint more, and you suddenly came out with this tutorial (I was going to work with watercolors!). Lucky, lucky me! C:
I had already tried the adding color when there is still water on the paper. I got some awesome results. I especially loved using that technique when painting a shooting star, and the sky around a moon. ^-^

Oh my gosh! so helpful! I can't believe I never thought of using a hairdryer to dry paintings!!! for light shades of paint for your people, do you buy light shades of paint or just dilute the paint with extra water? I like your demonstration of your backgrounds! I could still never think of doing something as intricate as that, but its cool to know how many colors you use! I would have never thought of using such dark colors cause I'm always afraid I'm going to ruin the picture!
I like how you used multiple examples in your tutorial! its refreshing! instead of trying to recopy one of your previous painting, hopefully some people will try to incorporate your techniques in their art! thank you very much!!!

For the light shades, I just dilute a darker paint with water. <:
