Description I just finished a new battle background for mountains.
I wanted to test it out so I did this.

Personally, I think this is awesome, it's such a shame Nintendo wont use proper battle backgrounds.

Hope you like! Turtwig and Bastiodon rule btw.

I did NOT make the pokemon sprites/animations. Nintendo did. Credits to Jefelin for the rips.

HGSS was remakes, where they gave the games a lot more details than in DPPt.

And... what do you mean? I said they COULDN'T do a battlescreen for every place you where... of cause they could, but wouldn't that be too much work? ;b

Kyle-Dove In reply to Mucrush [2010-12-23 23:34:07 +0000 UTC]

you said they wouldnt do it because they dont want the area to not fit where you are. That's not true cos in HG you're in a pagoda and the background is of a rocky cave...

Mucrush In reply to Kyle-Dove [2010-12-23 23:42:09 +0000 UTC]

I think you have misunderstood what I meant... nevermind then XD

Kyle-Dove In reply to Mucrush [2010-12-23 23:46:17 +0000 UTC]

Well you said - they dont want it to be like you're on some iceberg and the battle background is sea - not matching.

They already do this with the pagoda in HG being a rocky cave background?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mucrush In reply to Kyle-Dove [2010-12-23 23:58:09 +0000 UTC]

I said that it would be weird if the background was like a sea without ice, even if there was in that place. In the way you want the backgrounds to look like, it would be too much work if they had to make for every place you was in! That was what I meant. Or we could say that you had a Wild battle in some high crass at a rocky place, but the battle background would just be a normal grass place. My point is then, if they had to make a realistic background as yours, then they had to make MANY to reflect the place its battled in XD

But like I said, nevermind, cause its hard to explain XD

Kyle-Dove In reply to Mucrush [2010-12-24 00:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah right I see. Yeah that's true. I dont think the player minds too much though. They already do stuff like repeat what people look like regardless of their battle sprite, etc.

Dude, did i ever tell you that i love you? I think i should have, and im a fool if i haven't...

THIS IS FRIKIN' AMAZING!Even without swaying grass and falling leaves the decor and the atmosphere in this is stunning.

I absolutelylove this. Could you make more backgrounds? I think you'd be able to make even more amazing ones. I have a lot of ideas of what you could do based on your and 's galleries. You both have lots of cool pixel arts of places that should be more developed and refined you know?

I'm planning on making backgrounds for most settings (desert, cave, etc) I love doing stuff like this.

I reckon we will see that kind of stuff eventually... itll be a while before we have proper 3D pokemon games, imagine the memory eneeded for 563 models and textures... and it will be even more than that with subsequent generations.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyle-Dove In reply to Cadellin [2010-12-23 23:23:26 +0000 UTC]

I hope so. It doesnt look hopeful though with gamefreak hiring loads of 3D designers and the 3DS coming out. They'll probably keep the pokemon 2D but make absolutely everything else they can 3D!

True, but maybe they were worried it would look too crowded? What with the info tabs and everything? I dunno, I would prefer it like this

Kyle-Dove In reply to Black-Pteri [2010-12-23 22:50:48 +0000 UTC]

You could always re-structure everything around it. I don't see why they dont have info tabs on the bottom screen to be honest.

I can't do else than agree with lydario, the pixelart is gone. It's getting too much animated. Sure, the graphics are amazing, but the games slowly loose their 'Pokemon'-feel.

Your background is amazing though

SaviorofKeys In reply to pokequaza [2010-12-24 05:59:15 +0000 UTC]

"These games will never beat the original ones though."
Is it possible you're only saying that because you were exposed to them as a child?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pokequaza In reply to SaviorofKeys [2010-12-24 07:22:50 +0000 UTC]

No, because it was original back then. And just some examples. Generation 1 had random Pokemon with vague backgrounds; Electabuzz for example. While generation 5 focusses too much on making animals into Pokemon. Also they get more and more cartoony, while I prefer the anime style way over cartoon. The number of attacks available these days and the number of attacks a single Pokemon can learn make them almost all the same; the only thing that matters are stats, since more Pokemon can learn the same movepool. They should've kept the moves more signature, at least to a few stages. And I can go on like this for a while.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Kyle-Dove In reply to pokequaza [2010-12-23 22:24:09 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree. you're preaching to the choir there, I am so dissapointed at the lack of pixelart in the new games. It seems to be so 3D focused...A lot of BW seems to be trying to get back at pokemon's roots, but it seems like they completely forgot that pokemon started as purely pixel games.

44tim44 [2010-12-23 22:16:44 +0000 UTC]

I so agree with you!

I love that the sprites are animated, but why did Nintendo have to go make such FUGLY backgrounds/Fight-bases?
Nintendo has WAY too little Pixel art in the Pokemon games nowadays.

Anyway, I LOVE your background!
High level of detail, but still very plain and easy on the eye!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyle-Dove In reply to 44tim44 [2010-12-23 22:21:51 +0000 UTC]

I know...It's a shame that they've stopped using as much pixel art on the games.

Thank you very much, I struggled a bit with trying to find a balance between the level of detail without it being really crowded.

lydario In reply to ??? [2010-12-23 22:13:38 +0000 UTC]

I think what they have, gets the job done... but is a rotating background even necessary? Perhaps it makes sense for rotation battles, which could very well be part of the decision... it's still a little disappointing that so little pixel art is really in the game anymore... even the animations are like... all effect.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyle-Dove In reply to lydario [2010-12-23 22:20:58 +0000 UTC]

I know I agree, the animations bother me a little but I'd rather have it like this than none at all.

lydario In reply to Kyle-Dove [2010-12-23 23:50:23 +0000 UTC]

Double post to say that you did well, like always, kinda forgot to mention that in me being dumbfounded over why Nintendo doesn't do this for pokΓ©mon games, it just looks much much better.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

lydario In reply to Neoriceisgood [2010-12-23 22:14:44 +0000 UTC]

Yea, if anything, it would be easier than having the floor rotate. Although it does kinda look funny having the pokemon move, but none of the background moving... but that again should be just as easy to manage.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Neoriceisgood In reply to lydario [2010-12-27 10:23:04 +0000 UTC]

Even unanimated, I think that having some sort of logical background to go with the pokΓ©mon looks way better than what they have now, mixing the very pixelated sprites with those weird semi-3D backgrounds is just weird as hell imo.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lydario In reply to Neoriceisgood [2010-12-29 20:32:50 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't do it justice really. It's like animation for the sake of.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Kyle-Dove In reply to lydario [2010-12-23 22:20:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I only added the animated pokemon on as a kind of test, If I was gonna do it properly I'd have small effects like the grass moving in the wind, leaves falling, clouds drifting etc.

The floor doesnt even rotate really..just the background sort of swishes around...its completely pointless.
