Description Here is a statue I sculpted, cast, and painted for Dreamworks Animation Fine Art. It measures a little over 12" tall and 10" wide. It was quite a project, requiring input and approval from Dreamworks Animation.

Thanks! Can't wait for you to get it! I sent out the second batch of five statues yesterday, send me a note with your real name and I will tell you if you were in that batch. You should be, the last two batches are to an online store, and someone who bought three.

That looks awesome! What did you use to make this?

Thanks! To sculpt it I used Casteline, then used silicon to make the molds, and then cast all of the pieces in resin.

Holy cow man, I just cannot believe all the fine details in this! Incredible work! How long did this project take you?

KyleMillard In reply to insanitystudz [2013-03-23 21:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! From concept to completion, it took about a year. In that time there were many breaks, it would have been a few months of constant work, I can't count the hours I put into it. The casting was the most difficult and took a lot of time to get right, I am not a big fan of making molds!

Crazy! I cannot imagine myself taking on such a project, I don't have the dedication, kudos to you for sticking with it man, the finished product really shows how much work went into it

Wow, this looks fantastic! Considering how hard it is to sculpt well you've done fantastically to get it as accurate as you have here! It just looks like you put a lot of love into your work, making it really shine! Even the scales are in the right place... on a sculpture! You must have a lot of experience to do this and a good bit of talent!

Really, this is just fantastic work! Keep it up! xD

Yeah, I enjoyed it too... Like a lot... XD But yeah I can imagine it was fun to sculpt, especially once you blocked it all in XD

KyleMillard In reply to The-3Dan [2013-03-16 22:23:41 +0000 UTC]

Getting the correct proportions was tricky, Toothless has a tricky body shape, depending on his stance it totally changes. Once that was done, the detailing fell into place well!

The-3Dan In reply to KyleMillard [2013-03-16 23:04:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've tried modelling him myself (in blender... not by sculpting, Im no good at the real stuff) and his body just... Its very tricky to understand and I couldn't quite grasp it first time... Which is why when I see this actual sculpture that looks really accurate... Is just inspirational! xD

And hiccup is pretty well done too! XD

(and those feet... I found them hard to understand but you... you nailed it!) XD

KyleMillard In reply to The-3Dan [2013-03-17 00:22:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! It was very tricky, I am glad someone else knows what I went through! I also remember scratching my head when looking at his feet, those and his legs are very odd.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-3Dan In reply to KyleMillard [2013-03-17 22:13:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I can emphasise with you on the body... The head isn't too hard to understand (though the eyes threw me at first) but the limbs are difficult. The way I imagine it now is they kind of flow around the body rather than stem from it, which is quite hard to make look right.

Which is again why I am really impressed with this model, and with it being traditonal makes it just... Amazing xD

How'd you do those wings though? If I was going to do it I can imagine my clay just... slumping? (not to familiar with traditional terms)

The great thing about what I use, Casteline, is that it is self supporting. When room temp, it is hard like wax, and when heated, can be sculpted like clay. It allows for nice sharp detail. Though, now I am looking at an even harder wax, for when I need even more detail!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-3Dan In reply to KyleMillard [2013-03-18 18:41:23 +0000 UTC]

Casteline, I've had a look and it sounds much better than the stuff I've tried to use... Then again I think the stuff I use is kids stuff so... XD

It does look good though if this is what it can do, Ill look into more detail with this as well.

I want to learn how to do this myself but have kind of... Lets say no idea where to start XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KyleMillard In reply to The-3Dan [2013-03-18 19:08:52 +0000 UTC]

It is great stuff. If you want to work with it, the very first thing you need (other than the clay) are heat tools. You can use a microwave to heat up large chunks (but watch out, if warmed too long the center becomes extremely hot liquid before the outside), I use a heat gun for warming up parts of a sculpt to work on, once you have a general shape. I know there are a few in-depth guides out there for getting started.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-3Dan In reply to KyleMillard [2013-03-18 20:22:37 +0000 UTC]

Heat tools... So when you do it is it like a mix of carving and sculpting by hand then? Using the different forms of the Casteline for different parts of the structure... say like sculpt it while its warm into the basic shape then carve it away or use the heat gun to sculpt further?

(Good old micro waves... heating things inside out XD)

I'll have to have a look for them then, I really want to make a decent model... Probably no where near as good as this but I really want to give it a try! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KyleMillard In reply to The-3Dan [2013-03-18 22:15:55 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that is about it, there is a soft, medium, and hard version of the clay, I just use the hard clay. You will find, using the heat gun is necessary, up until you get to detailing, then you don't want heat anywhere near it!

I say, without a doubt, give it a try. Before I started sculpting, I used cardboard from cereal boxes to make ships from Star Wars. I had no clue I could actually sculpt, but I wanted to learn. If you have a want to learn, then that is all it will take!

The-3Dan In reply to KyleMillard [2013-04-03 13:12:09 +0000 UTC]

I will definitely look into getting this clay XD I wouldn't mind giving it a go, even if I fail I still want to try it XD

Thanks a lot XD

wOw this is perfection. Toothless looks so...perfect. Just perfect. I also love the little details. Like Hiccups leg, it looks so great! I especially love how the ties on his shirt are the same pattern as Hiccups, so detailed just ah! And the spots of larger scales on Toothless's face and his spots oh my gosh I'm losing my mind over here

Thank you for your complements! I love adding little details, where the general sculpt feels like work, once I get to detailing it becomes fun!

Man, if I only had $500 to blow... This is really, really fine work. I think the texture and detail are what really make this stand out, but you've also captured the integrity of the movie in this one little moment. It's just stunning!

KyleMillard In reply to DoNotClimbOnThisUnit [2013-03-09 15:01:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your kind words! I really wish it could have been less, but because I am the one producing them, instead of some factory, the prices are higher, it is a bummer. When I completed the general sculpt, and was ready to start texturing, I told myself, if I don't nail the textures, Toothless will look funny. It was hard choosing a pose, because I didn't want to take one straight from the movie, so this is inspired by it, not ripped from it.
