Description So I've been on a panorama kick as of late...but how else to show the amazing site of something so powerful and beautiful that covers the expanse of the western Oklahoma sky!

Tonight offered a different type of thunderstorm than that pictured just two days earlier. This storm is a gust front that just a link in a long chain of storms that stretched from Texas to Michigan. This line of clouds was preceded by the the upper level, bubbly mammatus clouds and proceeded by high winds and rain. If you look in the distant background, you can see the curtain of rain. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to capture this spectacle due to the low, fleeting light and the speedy movement of the clouds. This panorama is comprised of 10 vertical shots and a 180 degree viewpoint. Even though gust fronts are bowed in shape as they move, the 180 degree viewpoint gives it a little more extreme arc. Soon after, the sun set and gave the curtain of rain behind this cloud formation an intense redish orange color. So be on the look out for those pictures to follow-that was a real treat to see!

ha! Yup, we get twisters. Most of the tornadoes seemed to be a little further north this year. We had some in Oklahoma here and there, but there seemed to be a lot of action in Kansas and Nebraska.

I've done a little bit of lightning pictures, but never produced anything that I liked. I'll have to check that out!

Russ lives at Lightning Ridge.. Not named for nothing. He doesn't need a trigger
ask him and check his pics [link]
My understanding is that you can set the cam to multi shot when the exposure is right and lock down a remote and the cam will take for eg 10 second shots, one after another.. note to self....must try this

Great link! He's got some great photos!

Those long exposure shots on fast moving clouds in low light situations are really tricky to get sometimes. I'm looking forward to next storm season to try to refine some techniques!

Very noisy, but still amazing. Why were you shooting at such a high iso?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kylewright In reply to hougaard [2009-05-26 18:50:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this was one in particular that I will be reworking. The noise is pretty ugly. My ISO was set at 200, f/2.8, and a 1/15s shutter speed. I was also using a tripod due to the low light (right before sunset) and the storm was moving very rapidly. Let me see if I can fix it...

haha-I was glad when the wind hit b/c I was getting mauled my mosquitoes! The price you pay...

I'm not really fearful of storms, but there is something about being in an open field with a huge mass like this coming your way that does make you feel meager! However, I was a little concerned about getting struck by lightning...
