Description
So many words I'd love to add to this...Freedom is not cheap. Freedom is constantly being taken from the hands of people whether many realize it or not. Sometimes it is blatantly apparent. Other times it is more secretive and undermining...all in the name of a "noble causes", expedience, and misdiagnosis of crisis among others. Whether you realize it or not, by forfeiting your simple decisions in life is in effect you laying down your freedom of choice not only for yourself, but for all those that come after you. Freedom truly is a delicate luxury that so many need to evaluate the effects that their actions and the actions of others have on their liberty and the liberty of others. Educate yourself. Use common sense. Be responsible. Be self-reliant. Work hard at all costs to preserve the things which you so wholeheartedly cherish in life. Stand for something. Thank those who have and those who daily put themselves on the line to protect you and your pursuit.
I have to add that I wanted this picture to be like a modern take on a scene that could have taken place early in our nation's history...A soldier showing patriotic emotion towards a battered and worn flag that he is sacrificing so much for in a time of conflict preserving independence. Hence, the title being derived from the Star-Spangled Banner.

I'm a disabled Marine from Desert Storm. You truly captured the emotion in this piece based on your description. It wasn't until after my serious neck injury that art filed the huge void in my life. Out of no where I began to draw then paint in oils. I am a police officer in Las Vegas on perm. light duty. I am also a member of our Honor Guard and hold this position with the highest honor. Presenting our Nations colors in Flag ceremonies and even more importantly, at the funerals of officers who have passed on, is by far my greatest honor. I have always wanted to do a series of Military themed paintings. As an artist I respect copy write and for this reason I am asking your permission to paint this? Thanks for your talent and sharing these with us. They helps us to Never Forget.

From a soldier, thanks for the great pic. I don't think " proud to be American" is bullshit or propaganda at all. Too many peopl aren't proud to be American, when they should be. Many people in this country remind me of fat spoiled little children with no concept of the price paid for the luxuries they take for granted. When all the sides of right and wrong and moral justification are argued to death, all we have left is our nationalism. The only thing between us and the wolves is our defended borders. Americans need to wake up and realize that nowhere else in the world are people safe enough to sit on their high horse and criticize things they don't understand... Enough of my soapbox, keep up the good photography...

Hey thanks man and thank you for the time to write and your service! I agree with what you are saying and I feel as though we could sit down and talk for hours and hours about this stuff! I find myself appalled at how many people blatantly turn their heads from truth/responsibility and purposely accept deceit and evil. All it takes to discern such things is just a little effort...
Take care my friend and God bless!

When I first saw this image, I thought to myself 'Oh great! Another American patriotic zealot!' but then I read your description and realized what it meant to you, so I guess I'm sorry for misjudging you. I know how important is the freedom, independence and equality of all human beings. I'm just sick and tiered of slogans like: "They're dying for your freedoms." or "Support our troops." etc. Most people fail to see the duplicity of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, to them it's just kicking muslim ass and that's it. I know that the US government tricked the world into invasion, but that's in the past now. Oscar Wilde once said that 'Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious.' I think he was dead right. All this 'proud to an american' stuff is bullshit propaganda, I hate propaganda.
In any case, the lesson that should be learned here is that, as a species, we're not going accomplish squat if we don't put our petty and meaningless differences aside. The Universe is vast and we are so small, it's time to take a step back and look at the big picture here. It's time to heal our wounds and say our sorries and work for a far better future.

Just curious, do you live here in the United States? (I saw you had Romania listed as your home...)
There are several things I'd like to address and talk about, but I'll try to keep it short since I can get wordy at times. It seems a lot of our problems have been the influence of many years of the integration of an alternate political ideology that is somewhat foreign to what our country was founded on, but none-of-the-less, not new to the world. Call it Progressivism, Communism, Socialism, Fabian Society, Marxism, or whatever name it's changed to for the time being by whatever country. I don't believe Patriotism is vicious, but I am sure there are those out there in the name of Patriotism that do harmful things. I can think of several examples that have perverted such things. And you are right about propaganda and the dishonesty that it creates. After all, a majority of propaganda comes from the politicians that are or have been Progressives/Communists/Socialist/Fascists/etc. Saying that the world was tricked into invasion is not accurate. I distinctly remember multiple world governments and even the United Nations themselves, all recognizing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The funny thing, is that many of the U.S. politicians that used the "anti-war/war fought on lies" arguments to get elected in 2008 were recorded numerous times on radio and television saying that they personally had seen the intelligence and fully supported that Iraq, for instance, had weapons of mass destruction. The U.N. also knew these things existed and was supposed to inspect them, much like a inventory audit at a place of business or bank. But that was circus. Much of this just suggests that political expediency is a common tool of use. Besides, the United States is a sovereign and independent nation. The decisions of this country should not be dependent on any other country or organization's decision or influence, otherwise it would void our Declaration of Independence. I know these wars have been prolonged and weighed down by the years and it would have been wiser to have let our military pursue the enemy and do what the military is supposed to do, which is not become convoluted in/with politics. I believe that had they been allowed to seek out and defeat the enemy as quick as possible and come home, these conflicts could have ended years ago. I think goals and purpose of mission has become lost in the mix. It is my belief that the the U.S. should not engage in the duty to nation build. It is my understanding that this was never the intention of the founders of the nation. They wanted peace and freedom and to be left alone. You are absolutely right about pursuing a better future and peace! Peace and justice is something everyone should seek, it is unfortunate that this will never occur outside of what God can grant. But we has God's creation were given free will and the freedom of choice. And the reality is that mankind is flawed and there are those who are selfish and will always seek to destroy and enslave others. But don't get me wrong, we still should seek these things regardless, but stand ready to defend and fight against those that wish to steal, kill, and destroy, whether it is one our soil or theirs.
Thanks for checking my picture out and I'm thankful for your comment and the time it took to respond! Keep seeking the answers my friend, as I hope to continue myself in seeking such things until the day I die! The truth and facts will always stand against the weather and test of time!

I appreciate that! America seems to be in a position were half have forgotten who we are, what we were founded upon, and what we stand for and the other half that is awake, trying to maintain our Constitution, and trying to keep things from transforming into something we are not.

As previously said, this picture does invoke quite a bit of emotion.
"What are you fighting for?" is a phrase I hear too often.
I never had the opportunity to learn how much the flag meant to me, represented to me, until I was forced to fight for it.
Thank you.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss and absolutely honored that you view this picture as being worthy. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13 KJV)" ...and in this cause one's country. Our freedom is fragile and we owe a great debt to those who fight to maintain those freedoms on the battlefield.

I think we need to stop looking to someone else to defend our liberties. Each and every one of us has the responsibility to defend them. Not just the cops, not just the military.
The best way to defend them is to use them. Then we appreciate them and recognize how our lives will change for the worse. Then get righteously upset when someone argues the revocation of one (or many) of our freedoms.
Next comes the voting people out of office regularly.

Too much of America depends on the government to "fix" things- either not knowing or not caring that we are slowly losing our freedoms that made this nation great.

You are absolutely right! Government is not apart of the solution it's a part of the problem. The great men who founded this nation knew that and wrote about it frequently...What is strange is how much the Declaration of Independence actually applies to what is taking place today. You can easily imagine how someone could have wrote those same words today regarding the actions and course of the men who hold the sacred positions of the people's representation.

Very true. Bumper stickers and slogans that really have no meaning, pop culture and who is cool vs not cool...All of it has nothing to do with principles, values, or things that actually matter. I'm not very old, but I'm not very young either and I fear that my generation and especially the younger generations are lost and caught up in empty things.
