Description Apparently, all of a sudden, .gif files are not allowed for tutorials. What the hell? Then make it possible to have preview images! -is mad now-

I find myself again doing a tutorial.

Sorry, but this time it really isn't funny. x3; I genuinely want people to actually learn how to critique.

So, I hope that you enjoy it, and learn a thing or two about critique. ;D It helps to -cough- spread it around too.

Lol. I have given critique to many on instagram XD All of them freak out and then click that annoying "ignore" button. Like wtf. I looked at this to see what I had done wrong. Guess what? Nothing! God... I am so tired of those who don't write that they don't like critique. They are like flies buzzing around my head, but I have nothing to hit them with (plus, I am scared of killing insects irl).

But... I dunno.

There was an artist once who asked on a journal entry on how to be a better artist and after I told her, she screamed harassment. How do I deal with these kinds of people?

Throw your arms up, stand on your toes, scream in an intimidating voice and slowly advance toward the spooked animal. Carefully take your tranquilizer gun off your back, then shoot the damn thing in the abdominals.

Nice, though a bazooka gun sounds better...Can't believe this girl was actually 1.5 years older than I am...

Thank you for the helpful tutorial.

I showed this to my art appreciation teacher

(We were learning how to critique in class)

And she said that this is a great base to follow!

This is a great, helpful tutorial. All of your tutorials are wonderful actually lol this is my top favorite though. It would be helpful also to learn a little more on the art of giving a critique when it comes to art terms.

Remember that criticism isn't the same as critiquing a piece.

I'm so friggin faving this! I must admit, there are times when I've been a little guilty of just being either too cynical or too nice, and not really helping anyone at all. Thank you for making such a witty reminder concerning common courtesy and etiquette on the internet!

Much needed! I always get requests for critiques, but I don't know how to do one well, so I tended to not do them.

Personally, I really don't mind criticism at all. If they just want to help out and help me improve, then thats a good thing. But some people just don't take criticism very well.

No, see, I don't roll like that.

I give `em the critique, it's gotta a shitload of negatives, they can go fuck themselves if they want me to kiss their arses until the sting goes away (and the purpose of the critique ruined.

DestroyErase In reply to Jester-of-the-Clown [2011-10-31 05:13:47 +0000 UTC]

I believe in this to an extent.

It is because the community pampers young artists that they feel so conflicted when a rough-but-helpful critique is given. Almost always the users react as if it was hostile and begin to have conflict over the critique.

They need to harden themselves at a young age and learn to disassociate themselves from the artwork and look at it with an outsider's view. The form of critique you are preaching kyra is one that is created with the intent on making the artist comfortable.

I do not condone the use of destructive critique, but complimenting someone else's artwork will only concrete their misguided superiority, or value in the art world. They need to be given details on what is wrong with an image and learn to deal with it. The problem with taking offense has risen on this site like a plague.

X-Awesomemeg-X [2011-05-25 00:41:53 +0000 UTC]

Agree with this. I sometimes go around seeing comments and read what they say. I also read the critiques comments and the artist sometimes snaps at them for saying it. In the end, the artist is just going to get trolls. By the way, Do you have a tutorial about how to get rid of a troll? I read on and sometimes it gets out of hand, you know what I mean?

This cool. i can't critique because i have about no practical knowledge how to fix art mistakes. Plus, i don't have money for a premium. If it were writing i could do it though.

My drama teacher says when critiquing you should use the 'sandwich method'. Positive-Constructive-Positive. We had to learn how to critique our fellow actors. We got marked on it. I think i might have failed at that, because we only got a few minutes to do it in and a lot of the pieces were short.

Anyways, again this is pretty neat. On to the last three 'How to's'!

cembree In reply to Trixxster103 [2011-11-27 00:57:16 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...Sandwich sounds nice.
But you know, there are situations where there's really nothing nice, or the nice things are abecederian.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trixxster103 In reply to cembree [2011-11-27 15:53:06 +0000 UTC]

Alright after looking up the definition of abecederian, i have to agree sometimes there isn't anything good, but that's when you hope that the critiquee can take a blunter critique.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cembree In reply to Trixxster103 [2011-12-01 03:40:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes. We must always hope.
It's in how people are raised these days-in school, teachers rarely give constructive, honest replies anymore. And people get used to it.

yes yes critiquing somebody's work is never easy, gotta take the bad with the good. makes you thicker skinned. so, i made my own sorta kinda 'how to...' but it's really a box of possibilities. Have a look, it's called Six Reasons.
