I fully agree with this, thank you for uploading such an informative and objective tutorial! Critiques always seem very easy and straight forward to me, but many many people have no idea what they even mean and end up doing it completly wrong and useless.

Thanks for your comments Yes, a lot of people sadly think that simply being critical is helpful, and it truly isn't. The myth around dA is that people want pats on the back when it comes to critique, but the truth is the majority wouldn't know what a critique is if it smacked them

I usually do something like this, but your explanations and the example really showed me how to write better ones that don't sound as wishy-washy. I use a lot of "perhaps you could try" or if someone is asking outright for advice, I say "I recommend" (I read a different critique tutorial that says "I" and other personal pronouns should be left out of critiques).

I think critique is one of those things you gotta keep doing to get better and better at it One thing I found out while I was getting my undergrad was that writers and photographers seemed to find it easier to critique visual art than us visual artists
I think it has a lot to do with simply being objective, and that's sooo hard to do if you had your hands on the work, or if you understand certain processes well
And I agree with that other tutorial, leaving yourself out entirely is a really good idea (even down to using pronouns )

- the majority just give away as many
s to get their millestones called PAGEVIEWS;
- the majority does not even write a concise but constructive comment; when they want to get noticed they just write a WOW "3 word phrase";
THANKS FOR THIS TUTORIAL !!!

so do i! i was lucky to have pretty neutral teachers while i was getting my undergrad in art, but i did have issues at times with seeing other classmates and colleagues getting ripped by those teachers over things i believe were simply differences in opinion and ideals.

It's hard to impress people nowadays. Especially if it's a science teacher. I guess they see it as a way of saying, " Try harder." which isn't exactly good because it demotivates people.

Xadrea In reply to SonicWolvelina99 [2012-07-26 00:41:04 +0000 UTC]
well try harder is actually a good motivator in my opinion because it will push you to in fact work harder. as angry as some teachers can make us, we've got to remember that they are teachers and the one who picks on you the most usually is the one who has the most faith in you.

SonicWolvelina99 In reply to Xadrea [2012-07-26 15:46:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes but they should also understand that we have limits and they shouldn't put their expectations too high. That way, they'll get more disappointed and they will demand more from you, especially if it was your best work. Of course, that's where we have 'asking for improvement' but most people don't do that out of fear.

it great to try to be nice to others but you have to expect that people who crit your work will almost certainly say something you don't like and tick you off. And also sometime you meet up with people who just don't care if your feeling get hurt by what they say.
people forget we are not robot but are filled with emotions.i hop i'm explaining my point better.

Xadrea In reply to knightmonx [2012-07-25 21:15:03 +0000 UTC]
well, yes, there undoubtably will be people who will say things that will make you unhappy about your work, but this tutorial is more about how to be helpful with critiques, and not how to avoid feeling hurt. sometimes you'll have to listen to the negative and grow from it.

yea i know i just want the attention and to remind people most crits suck for everyone and not to get too upset.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Xadrea In reply to knightmonx [2012-07-26 03:00:35 +0000 UTC]
no, most crits don't suck. criticism is not meant to make you feel good, it's to help you grow and learn. there are the occasional instances when the criticism is not helpful or even personal, but if you're a student of art, it's rare.

Mellissa,
Thanks for offering to critique my work. I'm still pretty new - never had schooling, and so have alot to learn. I can see from your gallery that you do alot of watercolors people, and portraits. I think you could help me most with form... since I do mostly people in graphite. But if you have any advise on how to help me shade better, I'd love it too. No matter what I do, I see lines. EEK
I give all of my drawings away, so I'm mostly fishing for info that will help me make my next drawings better, I can't fix these ones specifically.
I have included my last three drawing links. I'd appreciate a critique on any of them.
The first one I had alot of help on, and I think, with that help, I was able to get a pretty good likeness... the hair, the hand, the whole picture was very difficult - I know it could be better. [link]
The second I did for the draw along group and experimented with cropping... I really liked the outcome... but I don't think the likeness is as good. [link]
The third one I just finished. I had to improvise alot on it because the reference photo was bad... the likeness is pretty good, but I think the eyes never were quite right.
I really appreciate any advise you have.
Thanks,
Helen

no problem i'll crit all three since i've got the time ^ ^ graphite is a really nice medium to do portraiture in because there's a lot of control over fine details
i think i know what the issue you're having with shading, you just need some variation, and i'll explain that in my crits
