Description
Apparently, all of a sudden, .gif files are not allowed for tutorials. What the hell? Then make it possible to have preview images! -is mad now-I find myself again doing a tutorial.
Sorry, but this time it really isn't funny. x3; I genuinely want people to actually learn how to critique.
So, I hope that you enjoy it, and learn a thing or two about critique. ;D It helps to -cough- spread it around too.
Not enough thumbnail space!

Great tutorial! I'm a bit tired of people getting pissed when I give proper critiques, just because I have some pieces myself that I don't want critique on. My opinion is that people should be allowed to give critiques to those who doesn't write "Critique not desired", even though they might not like to get critiques themselves. I hope this tutorial will learn people to write good critiques.

I've seen a plenty of people who are capable of giving very good critique... But they leave out the compliments. I've tried telling them that compliments need to be there, even if they think there's nothing good in there. Next time I end up in a situation like that, I'm throwing this at them.
Love the tutorial stick figures.

I agree with that. You just gotta point out the strong parts. But I've heard many excuses far and in between that "Complimenting? Sorry, I don't sugarcoat. It's not my style." To "Sorry that's my style. Don't like? Tough." And like you said, "Nothing is good about this piece. It deserves no compliments"
Too many people think style of critique makes them a speshul snowflake critic of somesort, and not pointing out a strong point is something that only pussies do or because they are too blind to try to find something positive in a piece. Every piece has a positive aspect. They just need to stop pouting and look harder.

Yep, sounds about correct when I consider the one person I've had. I recall them giving at least one of each of those excuses.
Curiously, it would seem that critics don't take critique very well. Or at least they start defending themselves and not try to change it to the better. Hypocrites. Or maybe... Hypocritics?

I've heard it from many critics. It's amazing how expressing something positive about one little thing on someone's work is automatically gonna make you a "sugarcoating pussy". A lot of the time, people use critique as a thinly veiled insult. Even if it is well done, they might have an axe to grind against someone they know or don't know. And people get away with it calling it their "style". Not all negative art critics do that, but I've seen the Critique system abused sooooo damn much by kids who think it's a clever way to get back at someone.
Yeah that's even more funny when they can't handle a pinch of critique themselves but they can critique just fine in a very harsh way. Try not to change it for the better? Yeah right. Lol funny. They are Hypocritics.

Something negative can be said about anything, even positive things. You try to make everyone happy and suddenly you're a filthy people-pleaser. And other stuff like that, which I can't currently remember. I've come to the conclusion that humankind just loves to hate.
Sometimes envy can be behind insults. "Why is this more popular than my stuff, mine is way better". Things like that. And even then, people could just hate the style. I'm pretty sure picking anything seen on the front page and going through the comments would make one discover negative comments.
Think I'm wandering off-topic here... Back on track. A lot of people don't seem to know how to do proper critique anyway. Some of them may actually believe that asking for critique is basically asking for insults.
An important ability is to be able to not take certain people seriously. Someone gives insults dressed as critique, then one reacts to it as "oh, you", pets them on the head and tells them to run along. It'll get particularly hilarious if the "critic" gets mad for that.

I've seen that happen to people. X-X; People pleasers and people who tried to do good too much, ended up hurting their reputation in the end because they got too obsessed with appearing good and popular to everyone... Some can take it far which is sometimes why people who do too many things to others get the stick end of everything. Then there are those who try to help, a good amount (no overdoing it) Then they get their hands slapped in return for helping. Which is inherently sad because helping should go rewarded. But sometimes, people don't take help nicely, or they take help and don't give back (Which is quite frequent) to their helper.
True! People can be jealous of the art so they say something snarky. Or they just don't like the style so they can't find good in it. Front page critics are great offenders and the best example of "Poorly constructed critique." They don't even have to use the critique feature to do that. It's just..... that people are attracted to popular things, or are just plain curious about it. Then they get mad either cause a) it's really good and they can't draw as well b)It's popular and I don't see why this is so great. c)gee I draw much better than this, why does this get all the views and my art doesn't >:V d)I'm gonna blame the artist for their piece getting popular because anything that is popular is automatically overrated and bad in my eyes. e) I'm so butthurt, I like to troll the front page and DD's because they don't deserve any attention.
That's about the gist of it. So much hate over something popular too will get poorly construed critiques.
Oh yeah, the ever classic "Well you asked for it!" Like as if they deserved to be insulted cause Critique somehow calls for it. Lol, when most register what "Critique" is, they think of people criticizing something and complaining. So they automatically think, "Oh, I see, so this artist wants to be told what is BAD about this piece, *cracks knuckles* I can do that no problem! This will be fun, I can let off some steam if I feel like it ^_^."
Lol, also ignoring pisses them off as well. They want you to respond as well. I haven't seen any critic get mad if you don't take them seriously. They usually play along; i.e: critique trolls do that. P:

Never really knew what was wrong about people who try to keep others content... But I suppose it can be a problem if they get obsessive about it, yes. Personally I try to keep everyone happy. When they start making demands that are completely opposite and there's no middle ground, I just feel like stomping out of the room. I like helping otherwise, though. I don't really expect anything in return, since the act of helping is its own reward. Luckily I haven't encountered any foul personalities that way yet.
Being the practical person that I am, I can't see what the point is in hating those kinds of things. I wondered this once and came to the conclusion that hating is just a natural part of being human. But yeah, all those reasons are possible, probably common, too. f) All of the above. Sometimes, when I'm really bored and can't really do anything, I go look for internet drama. It's the best soap opera I've ever seen. I never take part though. It may be more or less entertaining (about as much as a car wreck), but I would never want to be part of it.
Even without the misconception of critique being equal to insults, it's a fairly tricky subject. I usually welcome critique, but never ask for it because I know most things I did wrong in my works. Those who don't put thought into it would only repeat things to me that I already know. Then there's also a question about style. Realism is easier to critique because I think it can be quite easy to tell if something doesn't look realistic. When it comes to illustrations, cartoons and the like, critique suddenly gets a lot more challenging. Those strange proportions and terribly skinny legs just might be due to the style used in the picture. Particularly difficult if the artist is trying a new style from their usual drawings. Of course, some people go as far as to fanatically claim all the mistakes in their works are due to style. The problem is not always in the critic, sometimes the person asking for critique has a faulty mindset as well, thinking asking for critique equals compliments. (Wow, two completely different worlds there. What gives?)
I haven't encountered any trolls on my page yet. A friend of mine is giving me good practise with it, though. He's fun to tick off.
He knows I don't take him seriously, so he keeps doing it as well. The only thing I'm worried is that other guests on my page might think he's serious. I've had to break a fight or two already.
