Yea, until they tangle up.
I had one sitting on my desk, but I stood on it the other day (its plastic) and now it's all bent out of shape.

awww.. poor slinky..
but yeah i hate oit when they tangle..takes ages to make them right...
i wish i had a silvery one..i saw one in a shop one day but i got sidetracked and when i went back to buy it it wasn't there

Yea, those silver metal ones were wicked, I wish I had one of em too. If I ever see one I'm gonna buy it.
Slinkies are the best for fiddling with. Mine (used to! before I stood on it! ) sit on my desk, and I always fiddled with it. Hmm. Fiddling doesnt sound right. :S

it's so true. Everytime I try to sleep all I see are white ghost-slinkies bouncing past my doorway constantly.
So wheres your slinky? Did you kill yours aswell?

haha nice, i remember a movie (was it ace ventura or some crazy film like that)
with a slinky jumping a looong stair, but stopped at the last step.
For animating, is there a spine-(bone) option in c4d, or something with spines or atleast in that direction? That could be an option.

As far as I know that wouldnt work, but theres definately a way to do it 'somehow'. I'm just not sure if I can be bothered working/finding it out.

hehe funkeh! someone left my last slinky out in the rain so it rusted a bit and stopped being quite so slinky.
oh and, just to be annoying, slinkies generally have more loops at whichever end is on the floor, with less at the other end. thats a real bitch to model tho, so i cant blame you for leavin it out

Haha, yep. This is a helix spline in a loftNurbs with a bend deformer - having more near the bottom would've been pretty dam difficult to acheive.
I've got a slinky on my desk, it's plastic and has pretty much the same gradient as the one you see on the ground here. I never had a metal one.

no, i think u can push em all to one endd somehow

L-X In reply to FreeJ [2006-10-30 20:18:26 +0000 UTC]
Yea with the height bias, but if it was animated the 'compression' would be at the top and bottom.

capnhack In reply to L-X [2006-10-30 09:30:28 +0000 UTC]
aww, you must get a metal one. that sound it makes when one ring hits the others is just so satisfying
ive been thinking about how to model it and i think the only way would be to lower the height bias for the deformed helix and then attach a standard helix to the bottom. for one with both ends on the floor youd have to attach two low height bias deformed helixes to eachother. it still doesnt look quite right tho, i never thought something so simple could be such a challenge.

On second thought, you couldnt animate it 'walking' because the deformer only lets you bend from the top of the deformer... It wouldnt work at all.
Surely theres a better way to make a slinky in C4D.

yea youre right, that wouldnt work. i think you could do it with mocca, or perhaps by using a formula spline and manipulating it from one stage to the next. thatd be one hell of a confusing formula tho.

L-X In reply to capnhack [2006-10-30 09:37:57 +0000 UTC]
Only problem with having a seperate 'compressed' stage is that if you animated it, the compression would go from the bottom to the top... this way, you could animate it 'walking' its way across the floor, I guess... I havnt tried yet though.
This deviation is pretty much just the result of me fiddling with deformers. I always seem to forget they even exist, haha.
