Elephas maximus, popularly known as the Asian elephant, is currently the second largest land mammal of all, after the African elephant (However, in ancient times there were subspecies that were around the size of African elephants). It currently has 3 recognized subspecies (although certain researchers propose a 4th subspecies), historically inhabiting most of the Asian continent, but its populations have been greatly reduced by hunting in ancient times and today by its large tusks , as well as the loss of its habitat, and formerly it became extinct in certain areas due to its use for war. This animal has been found in at least 19 late Pleistocene fossil sites, mainly in China and Southeast Asia, making it a fairly ancient species that managed to survive the mass extinction at the end of the Pleistocene that affected the planet's large mammals. , including genera such as Stegodon and Palaeoloxodon that inhabited the same regions during the late Pleistocene. Like the African elephant, it is at risk of disappearing, which is why these animals must be protected from poaching and the loss of their forests.
