Description My latest wire tree...

This one is made with 30 gauge silver floral wire and about 120 beads. For the first time ever, I decided to skip the pretty rock and try mounting the tree on a mirror.

The other day I went to my local bead store and just started browsing. I came across these little silver flower beads that had a cool rainbow treatment. I loved them. Then I saw these other little circle beads (mostly green) with off-center holes and the same rainbow treatment and I decided they would make a really neat tree with silver wire... a slightly funky but still really pretty tree. I think it worked. What do you think?

You HAVE to see these additional shots:

Edit: Sold! This tree was bought by the owner of my local bead store and will be permanently displayed there.

this is absolutely gorgeous, and I'm kinda sad it's sold '(x
I love all the color leaves against the silver of the trunk and mirror, it makes them really pop. And the mirror makes it look like it's growing on water. It's really beautiful.

Out of curiosity, how much do you charge for bonsais? I'm sure like cost factors into it, so lets just say one like this so I can get an idea. (:

I bonsai similar to this would be $40 plus shipping.

I have to agree with ~gothicrosepoetry about how mounting it on the mirror does give it a more modern look... however, IMO, there's a good number of beads on there for the number of branches... any more an it might look too busy... but again, just my opinion

which brings up another point... so how hard is it to add more secondary branches? I see the main one and then a single secondary one... maybe if you added one or two more it'll give it a different, funky shape... maybe arcing it in such a way that there'd be a dramatic upsweep followed by a more subdued downsweep away from the trunk? just a thought... with the rainbow treatment on the beads, it might look cool

Breathtaking! I love it. I can't imagine doing this entirely in 30 guage. My eyesight is great, but my eyes would still be bugging out with all that 30 guage.

30 gauge floral wire isn't bad though. 30 gauge copper wire is like thread and won't hold up anything, but floral wire is thicker and strong. I think it's made of steel? I'm not sure, but it's something strong. It's closer to 26 gauge copper wire, but harder on the fingers.

I'm so used to Parawire that the thought of any other wire didn't even cross my mind! LOL!

I know how you feel! I love parawire, but I like to use floral wire for trees because it's cheaper and stronger and I don't need it to be as perfect as parawire is.

I used to use Artistic Wire before I heard about parawire. My daughters and I were just going through some of my older stuff and I found the Artistic Wire. I've got a spool of 34 guage lavender that I think I'll see if anyone on the group wants. It's way too thin for my taste.

omg 34? That's like thread... You might be able to use it for lacing, though I would think it wouldn't even be strong enough to do that.

I used Artistic Wire before Parawire, too, but in 28 gauge, which is way to weak for full-size flowers, now that I know better.

Lady-Blue In reply to rodentdrem [2009-02-27 12:44:55 +0000 UTC]

lol. That's ok. I recently bought a spool of 30 gauge copper somehow thinking I was going to be able to use it for a tree. Then I got it and realized that it was copper thread, not wire, and it wasn't going to hold up more than one seed bead, much less multiple beads for a tree.

Stunning! The mirror gives it a more modern and cleaner lined feel than the normal rock.

Although I think the tree would be even more incredible with twice as many beads.

I like this a lot... it can give you a Spring feel or an Autumn feel, depending on what angle you view the tree from! Very cool! And I always love the colors of those opalescent beads! Yummy!

I'm starting to really like the rainbow beads. I just ordered a bunch of seed beads with a similar rainbow shine to them.
