Description Wolfpark - 2011
Ruedi, Omega Male - Main pack.

Most of my recent visitors and long-time watchers know where I was this past weekend so I will not go into a long discourse about Wolfpark's awesomeness. However, I will continue to extoll their virtues in all manner of wolf related knowledge.

The reason I mention this is due to a conversation I had with Pat Goodmann one of the Park's senior wolf handlers and the Park's primary behavioral researcher. I don't remember what sparked the conversation, we were talking about Ruedi's eye color which is rather unique as you can see. Yes, look closely. That is a 'star shaped' outline around his iris.

Anyway. Pat was speaking to another handler, Gail, who was trying to keep the wolves attention so we could take pictures of them. She'd noticed that one of the animals had missed their treat. That of the three of them, the one that worked the hardest had somehow managed to miss his reward. She told Gail, who gave the wolf a piece of pepperonni.

Now this might seem like a small thing to you and I. But, I realized right then that Pat has spent a lifetime around these animals. That she could tell them so well, she knew who had worked the hardest, and who had missed their reward. She knew them like they were her children. I find that amazing.

Oh, they are all amazing, wolves and humans at Wolfpark.

Thank you.

Beautiful! We have a Wolf Sanctuary just 4 miles from my house. I can stand outside at night and hear them howl. It's the most awesome sound in the world!
Love the close up work, here!

Did I mention it's resident in dogs as well as wolves? I can't remember. But, it is.

He does have THE most amazing eyes! In all the close ups I've seen of wolf eyes I've never seen one with that star pattern before! And you are absolutely right about Wolf Park. It is a wonderful place where they are very much about the wolves and the well being of the wolves.

I did not know the definition of "merle" and being a curious sort I looked it up. From what I read it's a combination of blue and brown colors in the animal's eyes? What I do know, or was rather told from Pat Goodmann that day at the park is that it's genetic in dogs. Of course, wolves being caninds too, have the gene.

I'm not sure - I just know it's a breed of dog...
I said it was a wolf myself, but there's so many similarities in dogs!
