Dharma - Alpha Female & two of her pups. They have names but I could not tell you who these two are, yet. Pat could, though, that woman is amazing.

Have I mentioned before how lucky I am to live within driving distance to Wolf Park? No? I am.

Today Dharma's puppies were reintroduced to the main pack. I say reintroduced because they were taken from their mother when they were 14 days old and hand raised by human "puppy mothers" .

Now, before you get all up in arms about puppies being taken from their mother and ask me how anyone could do such a thing I should explain.

Wolf Park is one of the premiere facilities when it comes to studying wolf behavior. Four decades of humans, wolves, and even bison have made for a utterly unique opportunity. Wolf Park does not "tame" wolves. They socialize the animals to get them use to humans in and around their home.

Socializing gives them the ability to care for the sick and injured with a minimum of stress, it allows the public to watch wolves behave as they would in a wild setting, and it gives the animals interaction impossible otherwise. 10Have you seen wolves pacing back and forth in a Zoo? Well, like humans they become bored.

So, the puppies are taken away and handled by humans for a small period of time. They are returned to the pack once they recognize humans are part of their world. The less stress for the animals and the better chances you have to watching them behave as if you were a packmate.

I am done with the lecture. Suffice to say I am always amazed at the depth of devotion I find when I visit the Park, today was no different.
