Some updated concepts for the main kid cast to be seen in Volume 2 (well, ¾ at least 
Hester’s look was nailed in early–this is just to show that her in her school uniform (which the tween girls wear).
Mattie and Monty’s races have been flipflopped. Mattie was redesigned after I doodled up an alternate version of her and really got to liking it; also the older version had been around for three years and had started out as a mean girl design, so it was a little weird having her personality shift but keeping her looking the same. Her hair/eye/skin colors are Monty’s old color scheme. Also, the new look is slightly inspired by a friend of mine too.
Monty’s redesign included giving him a mixed-race heritage; his father is of the Maelstrom-verse’s version of Native Americans, and his mother is white. Another significant part of Mattie and Monty’s redesigns is that they have been aged down to actually look like fourteen-year-olds!
Angerona was also aged down so she’s the same age as Hester (twelve) and was given straight hair because I have a lot of people running around in this comic with curly/way hair as is. lolCharacters©Capella336

Oh wow! These school uniforms are great- much more inventive than the film versions of Harry Potter's school uniforms I must say! I love the girls' fitted waists and braces for the younger girls outfits and the stylish waistcoats for the older girls. That shade of green is quite pleasant too. Hester's bows and angelic 'butter wouldn't melt' expression is hilarious! I love how stroppy Angerona looks too!

Thank you! Pinterest was a great influence! lol I originally planned on using 1900s school uniforms as reference, but I quickly found out that school uniforms were popularized twenty years later so I had to wing it.
I wanted to show how the uniforms represent the different ages for the girls--the waistcoats being more "adult" than the halter-strapped dresses for the younger girls. I'm still figuring out what the younger boys' outfits will look like...I might just fall back on knickerbackers. xP
Angerona is a menace to girls her age! She needs to be careful or else that expression will be stuck on her face.

I really like these designs. Mattie's expression works great with her hair and overall appearance... she reminds me of someone... I'm not sure who. Angerona looks quite grumpy... the big bow is a nice accent but doesn't cheer anything up. LOL
As always, I'm interested in your world building! 'Native American' type peoples? I like the sound of that. I dare say, you've managed thus far to capture the feel of an original world. (That can't be said for most steampunk story lines. They seem to always copy each other and have bizarre gadgets. LOL)
So is the Sky Navy a military institution or just a "pilot school"?

I'm always annoyed about how steampunk stories tend to 'Europeanize' everything and focus more on the vehicles and weapons than the characters *cough*League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie*cough* Arksten is the American equivalent in the world of Maelstrom, so I thought I'd include some nods to it's basis. ;D
The Sky Navy is like the airship version of the water navy--the Sky Navy Academy is a prestigious school for kids ranging from 12-18 who want to go into the Sky Navy. If they decide not to pursue this career though, it's still a good option for their educational journey and it looks good on their record. It's sort of like a trade school for kids specializing in different technological/communication areas.

Yes! keep going with this world-building, it's just amazing! I'll say it again; it feels very original. As for the Sky Navy Academy, it also adds a feel of realism that most other writers don't include... the thing I like most about Maelstrom is that it isn't just senseless action!

Thanks! I like the stories I read/watch to be character-based, so I always make sure to flesh out my characters and their environments before getting to the action. 'Avatar: TLA' was a big inspiration in that aspect!

What?! Hester in the Sky Navy? This is not good. I really like how their uniforms look, I love that color green. These other kids character designs are awesome! Angerona looks so grumpy.

The Sky Navy Academy is actually a really prestigious institution for kids who want to go into the Sky Navy as adults, as it prepares them for the position they want to go into (sort of like a trade school for older kids). It's very difficult to get enrolled in there because it's so competitive, so parents usually have to know someone inside the school or be able to pull some strings to get their kids in...
