Description The first part of a series of tutorials. If you have some questions to ask me about, don't be shy.

- Next on the list: How to do a clean digital lineart

I never did that before.
If it is hard to understand, tell me. I could try to fix it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
If you use it,
please, fave it.
So I can know if it was useful or not

Kymris style evolved with me. I did not post something new from him for ages. Here are some drawings of him:

awww well, this tutorial might help to have a clean sketch, but it also takes a lot of practice Once you get used to the parameters, you can do pretty much everything afterward.
I am glad it could help!

Yes, I will take some practice with my old sketches XD
No problem!!!

Wow! I can't believe someone else uses this technique! I thought I was the only one, haha.
I found out that if you remove the white, you can color the image better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to Dommnics [2012-03-10 01:34:07 +0000 UTC]

true, well... it actually depends of what kind of technique you use for coloring In my case, with white or not, it changes nothing.

Yes, that's the cleaning technique I was using 2 years ago ha ha ha. I've improved it a little since, but in the end, it's pretty much the same thing.

Dommnics In reply to LaLunatique [2012-03-10 02:55:34 +0000 UTC]

How exactly do you color your pictures? What I do is remove the white so that its transparent, leaving only the outline, then place a layer under it and color. For me, it's all about layers.
I used to use a layer on top and multiplied but I find that that technique isn't the best..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to Dommnics [2012-03-10 03:05:37 +0000 UTC]

Indeed Well, for me it's GROUPS LAYERS PARTY xD ha ha.
Depending of the style I wanna do I use multiply or not.

mmm for example:
[link] Here I removed the white.

[link] Here simply used group layers and multiply.

But usually, I don't bother with white because I simply add a plain color (different layer) below the main subject. And I do so only if I intend to add a background. *-* but it's a little hard to explain just like that xD

Dommnics In reply to LaLunatique [2012-03-12 06:56:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha. xD

I have problems shading when I do the sketch, and remove white technique.. The shading looks off when I do it.

This... did not really deserve a DD. I can not count the number of tutorials like this that are much better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to BlueSkyBelow [2012-03-10 01:16:34 +0000 UTC]

I wonder why you are telling me this xD. I certainly did not kneel and beg for a DD you know. You can go and ask the moderators if not happy thought. But don't complain here.

Also, I got a lot of thanks and happy faces for this tutorial. That's what is important.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueSkyBelow In reply to LaLunatique [2012-03-10 01:27:55 +0000 UTC]

I hope you don't think that makes you any more important than better tutorials without DDs. You've just attracted the inexperienced.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to BlueSkyBelow [2012-03-10 01:41:38 +0000 UTC]

omg xD, yes, DD makes of me the ultimate God of the universe. Glad you finally made me realize it!

More seriously. Maybe some people might think that, I'm not one of those. As I told you before, I am not the one who chose my tutorial for a DD. I know it's a good one, but I never said it was the best. Also, in my opinion, any drawing/deviation/work is awesome if you put effort on it. When someone works hard, I think that person deserves a good comment, or at least a constructive opinion/ameliorations. It's wayyyyyy to easy to say: ''Your work is crap.'' and flee like a troll.

I'm glad I've attracted the inexperienced then. Because this tutorial is for inexperienced Photoshop users.

BlueSkyBelow In reply to LaLunatique [2012-03-10 01:52:34 +0000 UTC]

I can't tell, are you arguing with me? I was only stating the facts. I never said it was crap, but I really hate sarcasm, so I kind of just decided to hate you for that stupid remark.

Also, you do not know it's a good one. You should never view anything you do as a "good one", because it implies it is "good enough", if you think you're "good enough", you will NEVER be better. But that's. just. me. Good day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to BlueSkyBelow [2012-03-10 02:16:46 +0000 UTC]

The only reason why I replied to your first comment with sarcasm, it's due to the fact you just told someone who worked hard that its work ''does not deserve'' to be liked. I just hope you don't write those sort of comments to other artists often, because that's seriously mean.

I still don't understand the purpose of you saying to me -it does not deserve a DD-. What am I suppose to do with such a comment? Ask the moderators to remove my drawing from the DD folder? What I am trying to say, it's that when you have a critic to say, at least, make it constructive. Or else, you just sound like a hater.

And thanks. I know my limits well. I know when I do a good work and when I could have done better. Which also is very important for an artist in order to get better. Perfection does not exist, that does not mean we always have to look down at our own works and never be proud of it.

Good day to you too.

BlueSkyBelow In reply to LaLunatique [2012-03-10 02:32:02 +0000 UTC]

I believe you need to be corrected here.
I never said you did not deserve to be liked. I stated this particular tutorial did not deserve a DD, quite a leap there.
When you ask what to do with a comment like "It does not deserve a DD", you can do no more with that than a "omfg thank you desu". Those are the most common comments you'll get, and you'd be damned to "do" with one over the other, but notice you do not be so frank with the "desu".
I do not criticize, or do so "constructively", nor do I give out empty congratulations. I speak my mind, simple, pointless at times, but 100% truthful to myself and you.
I'm never satisfied. I lost that sense of satisfaction in myself, I did not wish to impose this disposition on you, sorry.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to BlueSkyBelow [2012-03-10 02:49:07 +0000 UTC]

awwww I quite understand your point of view now. But we... neither I can read your mind. It's easy to take such a comment in the bad way. Maybe next time you can write a little more about your mind and current opinion. Saying this for you... but also for the people around who certainly does not need to be discouraged. We all know here that on DA, everybody's a better artist than ourselves. That still does not stop us from drawing right?

As artists, it's hard to see the positive side in our own works. True.

It is good to look for flaws but it is also good to look for the good points in each of your drawings... and also in other people's drawings. I saw your gallery. I think you are an awesome artist and that you have a lot of potential. Don't be too demanding with yourself... sometimes it's better to say: I did a good job and I take the challenge to do even better next time.
We are not drawing for a living... but for fun afterall.

Apologies accepted. And sorry too, I'll try to be less sarcastic next time

this does not deserve a DD. This is an old technique and there are already a ton of tutorials like this that are so, SO much better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to Carouselskyline [2012-03-09 21:44:27 +0000 UTC]

thank you, but I think if it was chosen for a DD it must be because it worths it.
And yes, this tutorial is old already. It still can make a lot of people happy because it is a simple one made for beginners, and I am glad it can help new artists.

Also, you should encourage people instead of being so pessimistic, there is enough trolls on DA already. And I'm not talking only for me, I am sure you've wrote a lot of these bad comments with no purposes to other artists who only demands to have fun and be supported.

So, if you are not happy, go pestering someone else, somewhere else.

For this tutorial, you only need a mouse.

For a whole digital lineart, it is also possible to do it with a mouse and having good results, by the way.

awww you beat me to the cleaning up a lineart tutorial haha
*runs off to delete hers*

But the way you do it would be considered more a Sketch or a Sketch Line. Linearts generally are inked then scanned, or scanned then lined VIA a digital medium using brush and pen tools on programs like photoshop and Paint SAI. Sketches or Sketch lines are a little rougher than a lineart. A good example would be this pic of mine here--> [link] (minus the texture overlay and paint bucket fill ins of course XD) This started out as a pencil sketch and since I use pretty much the same methods as you do in your tutorial, I used em. It created a cleaner finish but the edges are still rough.
In comparison to this --> [link] which was inked in pen, pencil marks erased to the best of my eraser's ability, scanned, then using the same methods for clean up, refined as a clean lineart.

Either way the same methods are present for cleaning one up, and I am glad people have a good tutorial to go to now if they aren't sure of an easy clean up method

Oh, one last thing on my XP. Instead of doing the De-saturate method, you could always just go up and hit CONVERT TO BLACK AND WHITE. It will remove ALL color and keep only grey-scale tones. Much easier to work with than fiddling with De-saturate

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LaLunatique In reply to Auffallend [2012-03-09 18:00:33 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha ha xD I did not beat your tutorial. Let's say I got lucky that someone passed by. There is a lot of awesome tutorials on the matter and also tones of different techniques. They're all good when you master them, in the end. xD

Indeed, I should have written Cleaning traditional sketches & linearts. Since it can be a good technique for both of them.

For the convert Black and White... I've just tried it xD I can see there is a lot more options than Desaturate. But more options also means more complicated xD Since it's a tutorial for beginner better keep it simple. One button, one action, one result ha ha ha. Thought, I will try to use it myself if I get the occasion another time. Thank you. I am glad you told me your opinion and appreciation.
