Darn. This is well-explained! Of all the coloring tutorials and speed paints I've looked at, this is explained clearly! Thank you so much!

Thanks, some day I plan to do an entire tutorial that covers more of the finishing touches for special FX in photoshop.

I would hope that no one actually tries to learn how to color things from this tutorial. This is horrendous.

Your tutorial helped me solve a problem that had been bothering me for months! Thanks so much! Now that I know how how to expand the area the selection tool clicks, I don't have to colour everything meticulously by hand. (I'm such a PS noob, lol.)

I don't think this should have a DD. To be honest, when I was browsing through the gallery, the deviants were really good and well crafted. But, by DD-ing this makes me fear that the artist will be stereotyped for that style in the tutorial.

I can't help but feeling that this is very Chris Hart-like and that the character being colored looks an awful lot like Kya.
I don't think this deserves a DD because I've seen much better cel-shading/anime coloring tutorials on this site that don't have DDs. Your regular art is much better then this; this tutorial makes it look like all your art is drawn like the girls on here, which isn't very flattering to your actual skill.

Agreed. This isn't really anime coloring but rather just general cell shading..

digitalninja In reply to Nyanamo [2011-07-26 15:20:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I can see how it can be viewed as more of a 'cell shading' rather than 'anime'.

I also agree with these comments and wanted to add that this tutorial isn't very easy to read, the text jumps all over the place.

You really make shadows with the lasso tool? When I try this it goes all pixelated and a bit zigzag instead of nice and flowing
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
digitalninja In reply to Itami86 [2011-07-26 14:44:08 +0000 UTC]
It depends on what you use to draw the line, I use a tablet and although its tough at first after a while I got the hang of drawing smooth lines with quick gestures. You can also use the pen tool instead of the lasso if you are comfortable with vector shapes.

I really like this tutorial. It's helpful and attractive to look at. Most tutorials are dull and boring, and seem to presume you're a pro at photoshop already

my only gripe is that "palette" is used wrong. I'm extremely happy to find someone else who knows how to magic wand color properly.
not worth a DD, IMO, but then again not the worst DD I've seen yet.

Not to be rude, but you'd better learn to color yourself before teaching others. >_>

I feel the same way, that's why I went through 4 years of college learning drafting, figure drawing, graphic design, and color theory. But unfortunately not everyone can afford to attend college.
Like you said there are plenty of tutorials and books that teach true lighting techniques and color for real life art. That's why this is specifically called "Anime" coloring, this was meant for a specific audience and I wanted to share what I knew. I actually feel this is more of a technical guide for Photoshop on how to obtain a specific effect rather than a lesson about color theory. If you can point out flaws on the technical aspects of what is shown I would be happy to go back and do some edits.
I hope that explains it better for you.

Dude, I am really sorry and this IS going to be rude, but you wasted your money and years on college. Degree doesn't mean anything when it comes to art. There's many art students each year, especially when it's been a trend for the past few years, and only a handful of them actually become good and are devoted enough. I've seen some people in our Academy of Arts and they drew people worse than I in 8th grade. Then in the same Academy, there's some insanely talented people that are so awesome.
The general rule is that you learn on your own, college teachers are there to teach you how to learn and to teach you taste because most people (me included) can't tell what's good and what is tasteless garbage.. You just lack some really basic skills, I thought you were a teenager in highschool, which makes it all good, but you're a college graduate man...

Then I guess we agree to disagree. I have made my college investment back ten fold from the studios I have worked for since college, so I guess it was money well wasted.

I just want people to learn from quality sources, that's all. I don't think that everyone should be teaching others when they are not pro themselves.

i understand what you are saying i have spent years learning colour theory and how to manage traditional art. The reason i suggested this was because it helped me when i was starting out in colouring within photoshop, and as time grew on i found that i moved away from this. But as a foundation to build upon and learn from it was a great help. I am sorry you do not like my suggestion

Yeah, but she is still better than thousands of deviants, and her technique is pretty simple to begin with. She does cell shading, and that painting style is like she is teaching...
(yeah, "educate" XD, english is not my mother tongue and I didn't feel like using a translator XDD)

That's the thing. Her(?) technique is simple. It is a lazy shortcut, because people don't learn how lights work, how reflections work, they don't learn volume. All they learn in masses is how to add a darker shade to the side of a figure, not how to make volume. :/ That's why I am sad/raging.
