Description
Another entry in the Digital Ninja Tutorials. May not sound glamorous but trust me when I say, GOOD IMAGE PREP IS ESSENTIAL!!!This will cover how to scan a penciled and inked image, how to clean it up for coloring, and how to tweak some blending modes to make coloring and FX easier.
The full completed Hanzo image from this tutorial can be found here:
HANZO
As always enjoy the tutorial, let me know what you think, and I hope this helps some people

I don't have Photoshop, but I get a feeling this will translate semi-decently to GIMP.
I'll have to keep this where I can easily find it. Looks super-useful.

Hmmm, I can't guarantee it will work with gimp because I have never used that before. But scanning software is pretty general and can be swapped out with any scanner so I am sure you can get some use from it .

GIMP's said to be Photoshop's watered-down little brother, so I wouldn't be surprised if it did work (with slight modifications, of course). I think it'll need to be tried out.
Indeed.

While I don't have the top notch Photoshop Program and instead using SAI, I find some tools here to be quite cool.
I'll fave it and look it up, I'm sure other people will find this is useful. ^^

I wanna know where to get an 11x17 scanner for $50...
Mine's like, 9x12. Maybe a little longer than that, but yeah. An all in one printer. Should I just get a standalone scanner? I'm fixing to replace the printer anyways for a photo printer that can make my (soon to be)pretty drawings stay looking pretty.

I got my scanner a Canoscan 650U, which is only 9 1/2 x 14 at comp usa for 49.99. It's nothing fancy and you can actually get the same exact one used for 35$ on amazon.
Here check it out: [link]
If I have an image on a 11 x 17 paper I just scan in one half at a time and put the two peices together in photoshop. I do this for about 90% of the images you see in my gallery. Sure it's an extra step, but it works just as well as a $300 dollar scanner .
Hope that helps.

Ah, any way that you could add that part into the tutorial, along with any type of marks? I work in printing myself, so I'm used to seeing a bunch of different markings on paper to line up, and that's just something I always envision having to do if I do do a larger image, is setting myself a few crosshairs or something that help to line it up.

I left out the specific scanner and where to buy it because I was afraid that in a couple of years people reading the tutorial wouldn't be able to find it and would get frustrated. The point I was trying to make in the tutorial was that they don't need a $200+ scanner to get a better scan. They just have to know how to set it up properly
Although position marking is a good way to set it up, I don't use marks personally, in essence for me the drawing IS the mark. When I scan in both sides of the image there is always a bit of overlap of where the 2 images will meet (usually in the center of the page). So the easiest thing to do is in Photoshop lay the bottom half (or top) over the other and set it's opacity to about 50%. That way you can easily see where the 2 images overlap and you can position it correctly until the pencil(or pen) lines match up perfectly.
Try that method and see if it works for you .

oh... Multiply!
I knew the layer thing, but the multiply, no.
And about scanning i only done it years ago, i didn't know much about resolution, that's why my pencils drawings suck too.
