Well shoot! I just realized I'd never submitted, what was probably my favorite piece from my BFA show. This piece is all metal and it's titled "Fukinagashi" which is a windswept style of bonsai.

The piece is about 6 feet tall and weighs a good deal! It probably took about 80 hours of work, 60-70 or which was straight welding. It has over a mile of MIG wire embedded in this piece...

It currently resides at my parent's house... Although only temporarily. Sort of.

It's amazing! I'm curious of how it stands up, though. The details bring it to life, as if it were actually growing.

Thanks!

It balances its weight on the "Roots". They may look pretty thin, but are actually quite strong and sturdy and there's enough weight low down to keep it from tipping over. But there are no tricks... No wires, or anchors, or anything "attaching" it to the floor.

That's the litteral translation of fukinagashi? Or are you talking about something else?

You're a creating Mechine! Was it hard to get that to balance correctly? Or is it just heavy enough not to fall over?

Well, that steel is pretty sturdy, and it spreads wide enough that it actually has practically no chance whatsoever of falling over. Also it weighs 80-100 pounds, so it's not really going anywhere Plus most of the weight is at the bottom, so it's got a very low center of gravity.
