Description LOLZ. I came up with this idea at work and just couldn't resist. I'm not even sure it makes sense!

Ok, Kagome looks like she doesn't belong and that's cause among the three, her relationship with Inuyasha is the most 'constipated'! (Nifty term I picked up from the fans...) Why the heck they want to leave those boys behind is beyond me.....!

Left to Right: Kanzaki Hitomi (Vision of Escaflowne/Tenkuu no Escaflowne), Yuuki Miaka (The Mysterious Play/Fushigi Yuugi), and Higurashi Kagome (Inu Yasha).

EDIT: Also please do not correct me about whether or not they're in middle school or high school. There doesn't seem to be a consensus anyway so it's a stretch on my part. K?

If I had to pick any of these three, I'd pick Hitomi. Hands down. She's the most realistic, has the most depth and isn't just in the story to fall in love. She has great emotional development as a character, both for herself, and symbolically for the story. Hitomi has a realistic personality, but she's not perfect. Any time her imperfections caused her to make a bad choice, there are consequences for her behavior and she is forced to grow from them. Her romance with Van is the most believable, multifaceted, natural, and subtle. Hitomi is a teenager, and, naturally, she falls for the guy she defines as idealistic, without really noticing how great a friendship and intimacy she has with Van. And Van isn't some cookie cutter boyfriend, unlike Tomahome, who is the mega idealized boyfriend, and Inuyasha, who is the "boy with a sad past/chip on his shoulder that I can fix" boyfriend. Van has his own trials to overcome, and his feelings for Hitomi are natural for most guys. As in, he likes her, cares about her, and his feelings grow from that of an acquaintance, to a friend, to a crush, and, finally, love. He doesn't tell her his feelings out of shyness but out of fear of rejection. He treats Hitomi with respect, as a friend, and, later, as someone he loves. He lets her make her own decisions, trusts her judgement, reaches out to her for guidance and help, as well as tells her his fears and wishes. And there are times he makes mistakes. Hitomi also speaks about her world, her way of looking at life, her fears, and she also encourages and protects Van in her own way. Van's feelings for her grow without him consciously knowing it. And it's all because they spend time together, learning about each other and having great interactions that both build their friendship and deepen their sense of emotional intimacy. Hitomi learns she loves Van when she identifies that her feelings of friendship have grown into love, and that's also realistic for most women. Also, Hitomi didn't leave him behind, he's in her heart always, and she's in his heart, their parting at the end shows just that. Hitomi, while she does love Van, her life doesn't revolve around him. Unlike Kagome and Miaka, Hitomi is emotionally independent from Van. She's mature and able to live her life, enriched by both the events that happened to her and her love for Van. Hitomi is a great character, and the ending definitely shows that she can reach out to Van if she really wished it and if he reached out to her. Finally, Hitomi's story isn't just hers. Van grows, learns and develops his character just as much as she does, and so do many of the characters within Escaflowne. Even so, with so much going on in terms of plot, character and world building, amidst all that Van and Hitomi develop and fall in love.

Kagome and Miaka, on the other hand, are more fan-service characters. Now Miaka is infinitely better then Kagome, because she also gets development as a character. But Fushigi Yuugi, while it does delve into the other characters and world, Miaka's character is the center of it. Her romance with Tomahome, while sweet at times, does pander to the female audience. Unlike Hitomi though, while Miaka does suffer, she doesn't have as much depth as a character, her interactions with the world and its inhabitants aren't as rich and realistic, and her circumstances aren't as subtle and adult as Hitomi's. Miaka's adventure is more watered down. I'm not saying she didn't go through hell, she did, but her story wasn't nearly as subtle and realistic as Hitomi's. Miaka is more immature, and her story is about growing out of that immaturity, and she does. But her romance with Tomahome, while enjoyable, was cheezy and over the top at times. They fell in love really quickly, and have a Romeo+Juliet romance. As in, they're two young kids in love, and all they talk about is how wonderful it is to be in love. Also, Miaka and Tomahome suffer from "drama syndrome." Sometimes their romance just has too much silly and forced drama to induce tension. This isn't believable tension, brought upon by the fact that both characters have their own difficult ordeals to deal with (Like Hitomi and Van do), but tension simple to force the characters apart for no reason other then drama. But There are good things in their relaionship. Tomahome and Miaka, AFTER they've fallen in love, built intimacy. Now it's not as rich as Hitomi and Van's relationship, but it is there. Tomahome and Miaka learn about each other, and the more they stay together, the closer they become. While Miaka can be whiny, immature, childish, and an idiot, her story didn't shy away from her faults, and uses her short comings to force her to grow up, and Tomahome was her reward. Honestly, since she was strong enough to continue with her life, having grown up from her ordeals (albiet still a little childish and cartoony), and not leaving her friends and family behind for some guy, she deserves a happy ending.

And then there's Kagome who is nothing BUT fanservice. She doesn't grow as a character. In the overall plot, she does little to move the story along, stumbling around with her group while events just happen around her. She doesn't respond to these events beyond simple saying "this is terrible/wonderful," nor does she grow from them. She was perfect from the beginning and the show didn't bother to make her grow at all. The audience is constantly reminded how amazing Kagome is, and never are her faults addressed, nor does she suffer from them. She gets a free pass, both from emotional growth, and from danger. Rarely is she hurt, and when she is, they're just superficial wounds that don't scar, neither psychologically or psychically. And her boyfriend is a jerk and their romance is build on superficial emotions like jealousy, danger, and embarrassment (as in, they're both too shy to show their feelings to others, and, a lot of times, to each other). Their relationship see-saws and they don't overcome big hurdles together. They don't progress like Miaka or Hitomi do. Once Miaka and Hitomi cross a barrier with their guys, they don't go back or pretend it never happened and fight for no reason, they move forward in their relationship. Inuyasha and Kagome get close, deny, then go back to the drawing board and act like their at the starting point again. They don't address the problems with their relationshp, but rather pretend they never happened and have the same problems over and over. Kagome's just there to be a romantic foil to Inuyasha, to look better for him, when compared to Kikyo (whom isn't good for Inuyasha either, seeing as Inuyasha isn't even good for himself). Rarely do Inuyasha and Kagome sit and talk about each other, and by the end of the series, Kagome knows little to nothing about Inuyasha's history. They just sort of hang, and rarely have meaningful interactions outside of danger, or an object of jealousy, that doesn't end with one of them screaming at the other, and that's enough for them to be married at the end? It doesn't help that Inuyasha is an emotionally castrated fool, who never really confronts their relationship. And the audience is told that Inuyasha had some horrible past, yet we never actually get to see what made him be such a hard ass, he just is. InuKag were just forced together to pander to the audience. How many times can we prove he loves her by being jealous? How wonderful and amazing can Kagome look without having a single emotional flaw, or fear, or reaction to the situation around her? How GREAT does she look for Inuyasha, she's an angel next to Kikyo the bitch. Will they? Won't they? Oh the drama! Unlike Miaka or Hitomi, Kagome doesn't grow as a person, her role in the story itself is so minimal. Outside of being a plot device, she can be removed from the plot, and some events can be tweaked and she won't be missed, since rarely does she do something that isn't a deus ex machina. And her romance with Inuyasha is all about quantity over quality and believability. By the end of the series, she gives up her family and future for some guy, and she loses any sense of independence she had in the beginning.

Hitomi and Miaka are enriched by their experiences and learn to continue onward from them while Kagome grows dependent. I guess you can say Hitomi is the most detailed and realized heroine here, while Miaka has a good middle ground, in the fact that she learns from her ordeal and gets the romance that girls get their ovaries in a twist for, while Kagome is the self-insertion character that girls want to be when they fantasize about adventure.

*Munch,* thanks. If you *Munch* ever make a Jerry Springer of "I'm a middle/high school girl with a supernatural boyfriend," let me know.

One more note: Kagome gets a whiny half demon, Miaka gets a warrior chosen by fate, but Hitomi gets a KING...who also happens to be an ANGEL. There's no competition there.

Glad you enjoyed my analysis! ^_^

It's definitely longer than most shows nowadays but it's classic shojo action at work.

Ohmygosh, that part was devastating as hell!

Well apparently that's how I wanted to end my experience with that classic shojo action work, with devastating, cruel, murderous, painful, agonizing death.

Those three should start a support group. Plenty of other anime heroines in the same situation.

Although honestly not sure why you would want to give up a life of adventure, magic, demons, mechs and so on for school -_-.....I know education is important but COME ON, you're saving the freakin world on a daily basis......
