Ella: Yeah Mommy?

Cadence: Your father and I have been talking, and we think it's time you learned how to use your magic.

Ella: Really??

Cadence: Yes, it's something that you will need in your life.

Ella: How do you do it?

Cadence: Oh, there are many things that you can do with magic. But the first thing that you should learn is levitation.

Ella: What's THAT?

Cadence: It's using your magic to lift something

Ella: Ohhh I've seen you and Daddy do that all the time! How do you do it??

Cadence: First you need to find an object that you want to lift...one moment. *trots to a bowl of fruit near by and grab two by the stem in her mouth*
*signals with her head for Ella to follow and they trot outside*

(Shining Armor is outside and he has just finished talking to a guard)

Ella: DADDY! *Runs and gives Shining the biggest hug she can*

Shining: Hey Sweetpea! What are you guys doing today?

*Cadence sets down the apples on the grass*

Ella: Mommy's gonna teach me magic!

Shining: Oooo sounds fun! I gotta watch this

Cadence: Now Ella, when you use your magic, you focus on it and you use your thoughts to tell it what to do. With levitation, you imagine your magic picking up an object.

Ella: What does my magic look like?

Cadence: That's the tricky part about a unicorn's first time using magic. Nopony really knows what a unicorn's magic looks like until they see it. I think it would be best if you start out by just activating your magic, let it surround your horn and it will wait until you know what you want to do.

Ella: Uuuhhhm...okay

Cadence: Magic colors can sometimes be genetic, so maybe you should imagine aqua or magenta colored aura

Ella: hmmm....(Ella focuses as hard as she can on summoning a magenta magical aura to her horn, nothing happens, so she tries blue, but gets the same result)

Ow! My head hurts!

Shining: Ella, magic isn't something that you strain, it flows smoothly and delicately. Take deep breaths and you will be able to concentrate more comfortably.

(Ella tries both colors again more delicately and more relaxed but still nothing works)

Ella: *ears flatten*

Shining: hmm... not the right color, Ella, what's your favorite color?

Ella: uhh....purple!

Shining: Try imagining that color magic.

Ella: Okay (Ella concentrates and breathes slowly, imagining a magical aura, her favorite shade of purple, drifting around her horn)

*a purple aura starts to swirl around her horn*

Cadence: *faint gasp* It's working!

Ella: *Opens her eyes and looks up* *Gasp* It's purple! YES!

*the magic fizzles*

Ella: Agh! *focuses again and the aura comes back*

Cadence: Now look at the apple in front of you, and do what I do...*Cadence lifts her apple up and keeps it level with her nose*

Ella: That looks as easy as flicking a tail!

Cadence: It is!

Ella: *Ella focuses on what she thinks is the apple right in front of her, but is actually levitating her tail*
Mom it's not working!

Shining: *snickers* You're doing great Sweetie!

Ella: Daaaad! The apple's not even moving!
*her legs are off the ground but she is concentrating on the apple so much she doesn't notice*

Cadence: *holding back a laugh* Sweet heart, look behind you.

Ella: *looks* How did THAT happen??!

Cadence: When using magic, it is essential that you don't get-

Ella: OOOo a butterfly *startes running after it with her hindlegs still in the air*
