I worked on this for my senior studio class, but it wasn't received very well. I worked pretty hard on it so I'm a little discouraged but whatever.the creature represents the three ghosts of Lear's family as one single entity, their hands are in the ASL sign for "House". In Lear's hands, is the orb that Asher's soul was trapped inside when she first meets him.

I totaly agree with Sleyf about "different audiences". And I think he gave you very good advice (couldn't give you any better)
This is an honest (because of the sketchy part) , a fine (shape) and a deep (contence) piece of Art in my opinion (for what's it worth)

Looks great, I do love how fleshy and yet skeletal the family amalgamation looks, the head mashed together is unsettling, especially as one looks like it may be upside down (the one on the left)
Don’t be discouraged, different audiences react differently, and as I understand it (probably misconceptually) art school students are snobs

thank you, I wanted it to be more melty in my head, but I settled for it being this twisted, muscular yet skeletal, vine like thing. and yes that one is indeed upside down!
they didn't like it because it was small and symmetrical

Lol but symmetry is good! (And a little more difficult to achieve) but I guess they’re expecting a more exciting composition or something. Honestly there’s nothing wrong with symmetry but I guess I can understand their reasons

I think the composition works for the message I meant to convey, and I can't really picture it any other way, so I don't really follow why my teacher was telling me to attempt this in other compositions because I already tried a bunch of thumbnail sketches and this was the best option.

Don’t be, just focus on your on work and don’t worry about levels. You’re honing your skills and are there to improve, not to prove anything. I mean you’re already really good with live model painting and using traditional mediums, your bumblebee I saw was great. And by the end of this course you’ll have pushed yourself a little further, getting out of comfort zones is quite beneficial even if it feels uncomfortable.
Here’s what I did at uni, I selected the person I felt most intimidated by to hold as my own personal challenge. If I could push myself to kind of equal them, I had challenged myself (I find challenges like that fun sometimes). I didn’t get upset when they did better, I just looked at what they achieved and told myself I could do that or better next time. That way you set yourself tiny personal goals regardless of the overall intimidation and you’re not overwhelmed as you’ve targetted one point of focus (also after a while you’ll notice that perhaps that person isn’t more skilled than you, and you’ll notice your own strengths over theirs as well as their potential weaknesses where you excel)
