Description
My character for the Pathfinder campaign that is DMing, with , , , , , , and one other person who isn't on dA as the other members of the party.Ayara is an ifrit, a hybrid between a human and a being of elemental fire - exactly what that is, she doesn't know. She's also got a blue dragon somewhere in her ancestry, giving her the draconic sorcerer bloodline. This triple mix of species may or may not have also left her a little bit mentally unstable.
As Raven pointed out in his song for her (Feed My Flames(ICW) , Ayara is without a doubt the Belkar of the party - the one who constantly toes the line, the one who's by far the most monstrous in how she acts. She's a pyromaniac, and her default response to threats is shoot first, threaten second, and laugh third. She's a deeply broken person, and she knows it; however, instead of trying to change herself, she tries to channel her power towards those she feels deserve it - she just, well, tends towards overkill a tad much.
She's also pretty obsessed with all things draconic - in the setting, dragons are extinct, and she wants to try and bring them back. However, her top priority is more than a little bit unusual - locating her adopted little sister, a sylph paladin by the name of Lilt.
Ayara and Lilt grew up together in an orphanage, quickly becoming nearly inseperable and finding common ground as two of the relatively few nonhumans in town. Eventually, though, the two hybrids were adopted by different families: Lilt by a paladin and his wife, a cleric, and Ayara by an old tengu wizard. The two stayed in touch for years afterwards, even as they chose different careers in life: Ayara learned to hone her powers as a sorcerer and eventually got a decent job at a mage college and researched dragons in her spare time, while Lilt became a travelling paladin alongside her adopted parents. Suddenly, however, Lilt went missing - bandits had attacked and destroyed a town that she had been visiting, and while the bodies of the sylph's adopted parents were found among the dead, all that could be found of Lilt was a silver holy symbol on a chain that Ayara had enchanted for her as a birthday present.
When the ifrit got the news, something inside of her broke. She wordlessly packed her things, swiped several dozen high-level wands and scrolls from the university, then bought a horse and rode out to the bandits' hideout. The next morning, nothing was left of the outlaws but a smoldering ruin, but there was no sign of Lilt.
That was decades ago (Ifrits and sylphs age much slower than humans do - Ayara's over a hundred years old, and she's basically equivalent to her mid-20s), and Ayara is still searching, with her investigations eventually leading her to the island of Conquered Worm with the rest of the party. Despite herself, she's grown to like the group, seeing them as an extended family of sorts.... but as it turns out, Lilt is on the island, and sooner or later, she's going to have to choose between her new friends and her beloved sister.

I know you commissioned this and all, so you can't actually change the artwork, but maybe next time you could have the color palette and general aesthetic refined in the next commission. I feel the orange shirt is a bit too close in tone with her skin's color, maybe switch for a duller green or brown? Also her general archetype is kinda hard to pin down. Is she a mage or a fighter? The staff and fire say mage, but the swords and muscular frame say fighter. I'd push towards one or the other if you want people to immediately pick up on the kind of attitude she's meant to reflect.

She's a sorcerer; I take great pains to avoid making her squishy.

Still it sends mixed messages and I'm not sure if that's what you want.

Characters are more than the cliches that define their archetypes. There is nothing misleading or contradictory about a magical fighter wanting a line of defense beyond their magic.

Still it feels a bit disjointed as there are other ways to imbue a sense of defense and durability to a mage than giving them attributes of a fighter.

... No. No there aren't, if you consider "muscular build" and "non-magical sidearms" inherently Fighter-specific attribute.
This isn't a videogame, you're allowed to have complexities.

I suppose there are more freedoms to television shows, comics, and movies, but even then as far as I can tell most character designs make sure that an audience can understand the basics of a character. And there are ways to make a mage still feel battle ready. Armors, certain magical effects like barriers, etc can be illustrated.

Magical barriers need to be renewed, consciously cast, and go down with antimagic. Natural toughness never goes away.
"Physically tough woman who is also a spellcaster" is not remotely difficult to comprehend. I am genuinely baffled by your aversion to it.

I'll agree with you there now, though if it were me I'd make her spell casts more physical in nature as if she makes the fire part of a sword swing for instance.

Would you do something like thos for a Warhammer character, like say... a Skaven? Like a Grey Seer or a Storm Vermin?

She's also a great big bundle of dork and love. She's just good at hiding it from normal people.
