Description
Finally, a multiple of five! It drives me nuts when I have a series of something with more than two but not a multiple of five, just feels wrong.My goodness these are fun to make, I really like the fact that I can play around with the poses an anatomy while also making them look somewhat finished. This round I got a little carried away with the details when it came to number 3 and number 5, which make it look a little out of balance, but it was so much fun to draw that it was worth it in the end. Anyways, enjoy round five of the creature compilation series!
Creatures are numbered and labeled with a letter designating which project they are from.
F = Fakemon, P = Pterraforming, L = Lucid, R = Requests or fan art (Mostly fan art, F was already taken)
1: [Lucid] Dapper Dragon, a boss from tier 2. Dapper first appeared in a dream I had back when I was in middleschool where this classy dragon kidnapped our whole class, brought them to his [well furnished] cave, and was planning on cooking us in a soup, so I had to save everyone. Despite that being the only dream I ever saw him in, he definitely made an impression on me and I ended up drawing him quite a bit. Despite trying to basically boil us all alive, he was actually quite a gentleman, so that will probably be incorporated into the Lucid appearance. Like all Lucid bosses, Dapper would be much more dynamic than the monsters, appearing multiple times throughout the game and potentially able to be allied with should the player choose to pursue that route.
2: [Request] Fanart of Rexander134 's Gorgon concept for his Yaku Defenders series. I don't know if he's uploaded the concept yet, so I'll try to summarize (I apologize if I butcher it). The creatures in this series are meant to be like mythical animals and creatures, but in a more natural environment and actually fit into an ecosystem. The gorgons are a predatory species that hunt mostly via ambush, sneaking up on prey and then striking when they get close enough. The tendrils on the head are webbed and can be extended, which they use to either startle prey before grabbing it or scare of enemies or rivals. This is where the "turning things into stone" would come from in this world. They also possess webbing between their limbs, which allows them to glide around similar to that of the flying snakes .
3: [Pterraforming*] A cluster of pink prince flower amanitas, an amanita native to the west coast of Ptereathian North America. "But wait!" you say, "That's not a creature! It's a mushroom!". Yes, they are mushrooms, but mushrooms in a way are creatures! Mushrooms are actually very closely related to animals, much more so than to plants, believe it or not! Because of that (and my sheer love of fungus in general), I will be including them in creature comps. With the pink prince flower amanita (or ppfa), they are an extremely unusual member of the Amanita family. Their most prominent feature is undoubtedly their unusual caps, which split into a flower like form as the caps grow. Aside from their caps, they also posses odd features such as a dense clustering habit (most amanitas don't grow so close together or as dense) and a much more saprobic nature (i.e. they mostly obtain their food from their decomposing material rather than forming a symbiotic, or Mycorrhizal , relationship with trees). While edible and easy to identify for an amanita, the mushrooms aren't particularly good, both lacking flavor and the unusual cap making for an odd texture.
*While this is labelled as the Pterraforming Project, pink prince flower amanitas will also appear in Lucid.
4: [Pterraforming] A Pacific blue pterowhale, one of the largest species of pterosaur ever to exist on Pterearth. A member of the "whaledont" subclass, Pacific blue pterowhales are filter feeders of the open ocean, traveling long distances in search of food. Like all Pterosapians*, this pterowhale possesses an extremely acute sense of hearing, with large, gelatinous organs very similar to the cetacean melons on their foreheads and jaws to help focus in sounds. In face, the blue pterowhale's hearing is so acute, that the pterowhale doesn't need to see, and is therefor completely blind. The eyes are so atrophied that there isn't even a socket where they could go. Like true whales, pterowhales navigate by echolocation, using their super hearing to hunt down schools of krill, fish, and plankton. Special ridges in the tongue and bill act like baleen to help sift food from the water.
*I've decided to change the name of the class from sapiodont to pterosapian, which fits better imo (sapiodont roughly translates to "smart tooth", which doesn't fit as well for the group since a) the wings (ptera) are more significant and b) none of the members have teeth
5: [Lucid] The Hyperdra, a tier 2 boss. The Hyperdra is based on a creature/concept I had dreamed about a lot back when I was in late elementary/early middle school, most likely inspired by this painting from the Chicago Art Institute. Said to be the collective manifestation of all snakes cruely slain by man, the Hyperdra is a force to be reckoned with. Like a hydra, the Hyperdra continuously grows new heads, although the head doesn't need to be cut off to do so. A ravenous monster, the Hyperdra must constantly feed, using all available heads to grab and swallow prey. Each head represents a different deadly species of snake, and all possess a deadly bite. If the Hyperdra does not catch enough food, it will actually turn on itself, the larger heads breaking off the smaller heads. The necks are specially designed to break off without permanent injury, such as specialized muscle tissue that splits cleanly and clamps in the arteries that prevent bleeding.
6: [Pterraforming] The greater bighead pterodolphin, one of the largest of the subgroup. Unlike mammalian cetaceans, both the "toothed" and "baleened" whaledonts possess the melon like organs, not just the toothed variety. Like all whaledonts, the bighead pterodolphins use modified wing-flippers to propel themselves through the water, rather than up and down or side to side undulating motions. the body is built like a submarine, with specialized reinforced ribs, spine, and airsacs that help with buoyancy and compression. Pterodolphins are members of the "toothed" subclad, possessing sharp serrations in the beak to help grab slippery prey and tear it to pieces. Bighead pterodolphins are actually solitary animals, spending most of their time alone hunting for food. The only exception to this is during the breeding season and when females are rearing young.
7: [Fakemon] Random ribbon inch worm fakemon I came up with. I was going for measuring tape when I made it, but a couple of people said it looked like a literal CATerpillar, and I have to agree. The head was actually based on a caterpillar I once found with a heart shaped head. It probably won't be a part of any of my dexes, as I already have enough bug Pokemon, but I will probably be using it for a joint region me and Rexander134 are making for fun. I haven't decided on what the technicalities will be for it yet.
8: [Fakemon] The final evolution of mr CATerpillar, this time a bow butterfly. I came up with the idea when I saw an old Christmas bow lying on the ground, and thought it looked kinda like a butterfly. Like it's pre-evolution I haven't decided on a name, type, etc yet, although Rex suggested that maybe they could be tied into gift giving or holidays that incorporate bows and gifts (like Christmas or Valentine's day).

What's with the armor on the blue pterowhale's flippers? Defense?

It's mostly left over from the wings, but it does help protect the skin since they use their flippers to thwack rivals and predators

Aight. Next question: Why have they retained the crest?

It acts as a dorsal fin. Both males and females have them, and are identical in size and shape (in most cases). For most seadonts, the crest is extended by cartilage, and can be used to steer (the neck vertebrae aren't fused like in some cetaceans, so they can just turn their head in the direction they want to go).
