I like the composition you chose, and the area around the head is definitely more interesting than the photograph itself. The relaxed lines give it some movement and interest! I am just a beginner and am learning about what I like in certain art works, I think this will help me create a style of my own. Does that make sense to you?

nice, I think it's great! Will be using it; thank you so much for this great and professional-looking tutorial! do you digitalize your finished pencil pictures ever? I bet this would look super digitally colored!

Thank you!
Well, I don't really digitalize them except for adjusting some tones since my scanner tend to scan my pictures darker than they are.
But thanks for the input, I should try it out

This is the first tutorial I've come across that points out way of holding the pencil too. Tried it, was hard, and also noticed that I had to focus on values most, and forget detail.
But is there particular reason for that style of holding?
Thanks for great tutorial.

leinef In reply to Hiliasin [2011-08-22 20:47:49 +0000 UTC]
Thank you <3
It's alright that the values are sometimes more important than little details. I tend to work roughly on values first before going for details.
Uhm, the reason for this style of holding is just because it's easier to do lines in that holding. The lines are more smooth and cover a bigger area. But I think it's also just the preference of each person.

No need to thank me I'm glad you liked this tutorial
You don't need to do very dark shadows in the beginning. Try some pieces without too dark shadows first and after some practice you could start adding dark spaces as a last step.

Very very fine tutorial There is a group that can interest you:
I like the mention to step away from the picture often, things that many people (including me) don't do. XD
I am using a drawing table and I found out my mistake to not work with the inclined plan, such my drawings looks distorted when looking at them face to face. Another trick is that I am looking sometimes at the drawing from a mirror. It shows nice surprises...

leinef In reply to philippeL [2010-11-25 22:52:08 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I'll look at the group
Ah yes the mirror trick is a nice one as well! But I don't have any mirrors by me when I work on big picture or I don't have mirrors big enough for them. But yes, that's a nice help too. I also make long pauses about a day and look at the picture again. It seems that you see some mistakes easier like this

philippeL In reply to leinef [2010-11-26 15:29:23 +0000 UTC]
This is true that pauses are very recommended, and there come the surprises when you come back to your drawing the day after

blending stump or what ??

leinef In reply to Jiiiii [2010-11-12 18:44:12 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot
Uhm, I never used a blending stump since I don't like them. I cross-hatch to shade It works better with my style!

The tip with the chair is good, I think i'm gonna use it in my next class, i'm so short that I cant sit on a chair and hold my board with the paper right for long without getting pains xD
