Description
A third photo in the project series of Shifting Light [link]Strange to think that the colours produced are as the camera sees them.
If you ever try this type of art then you will experience this effect for your self. When using very close range flash on maxium power and within a few inchs of the smoke the colour balance goes a bit wierd this was shot at 5200K but obviosly the electronic flash is a lot cooler so produces a cool tone, however as the light passes through the smoke and the shadows are cast in the smoke from the smoke the colour temp warms slightly and so produces a purple/magenta colour. This image required no adjustment to the saturation or hue but I did increase the contrast curve in the raw converter to a stronger curve.
Shapes can be made in the smoke by either blowing gently, or a more controlled method, by a small low speed motor spinning an object, for this I call upon my lego!

Hmm... What did you use as the background (and how far away was it) to get it to come out entirely black despite the flash?

This is my favourite in the series.
Decarabia69 sent me looking, and I must say, I'm impressed.

you only need a powerfull flash and a few off camera flash leads and a bit of forward thinking and planning and you'll be amazed what you can come up with give it a go!

Amazing, the smoke seems to have been frozen in time and the composition of the colors are like of those seen with deep water animals which dont need light to survive under water. Indeed your experiments and over all results are fascinating!

So you need a flash for this, the built-in camera flash is not enough??
I'd really like to try this
Awesome shot

yeah you need flash. You would have to use a flash gun not a built in flash and also you would need a TTL flahs extension cord so that you can position the flash to the side or behind the smoke.

While devart was rad only I came across your shifting light series. I must say that you have taken some amazing shots. I have read through your journal entry on the matter and was most interested to find that you dont use really fast shutter speeds. Gives me more hope
I have been experimenting with some light painting though nothing as flash as your smoke shots. Keep it up

Hi! Thank you for your kind comments! Yes you don't need fast shutter speeds at all, infact I have a few shots where they are taken at 2 seconds.

I relly like this one. Its so linear and precise at the base, then seems to begin transforming into some kind of creature!

the color and the shape I think.
First one was too blue for me
I like the second one too but I think that this has a better shape...
