if you're only using the fabric for the spine, i think you'll be fine! i would double it over, though, just as a precaution, and use only a really small amount of glue... mybe even wait a minute after applying the glue to let it get a bit tacky and not so wet before you lay your material on. (always apply glue to your cardboard, not what you're glueing to it).

as for covering your whole book, i have learnt of a new way but i haven't tried it out personally and i don't know much about it.. but apparently if you buy a special iron-on backer for your fabric (i don't know if this is just your normal iron-on fabric stiffener or what) you can then apply your glue without it seeping through! you could always experiment with a few different types of fabric stiffeners... just make sure they're not too thick, otherwise you won't have the flexibility of folding it under and around your cardboard.

aaannnnnndd (lol) you can definately print out lines sheets! google is your friend i don't know of any specific templates, but if you look up lined template, or.. page template.. or something along those lines you should be able to find something. if you have photoshop you could even do it yourself, or maybe for something a little more 'handmade' you could line a full page by hand with a pencil or pen and scan it and reprint?

Thank you very much for the advice.

Yeah, I would think the cardboard would get the glue. I heard somewhere that you always put the glue on the tougher, harder surface.

This was, quite possibly, the most amazing tutorial I've ever seen. I read a few others, but they were a little... overpowering? I've always wanted to bind my own book, but couldn't find a reasonable place to begin. I gave it a couple of attempts, but they were all so... Newbish? Unprofessional? Bad? Yeah, bad.

This tutorial explained each step so well, I think I'll have to give it another shot!

I'm really looking forward to trying this out, really!!
I'll post a link if I get a reasonable looking one done.

*Goes to hunt for supplies.*

I've been looking all over the net for coptic stitching tutorials, and can't believe that I totally blanked searching on DA! Durrrrrrrr!!

Anyway, I found a tutorial that I liked and followed for the sigs, but I didn't like the way they bound it to the hardboard... I totally prefer the way you've shown me! I was wondering how it was done this way. A HUGE thank you for this tutorial! I will certainly be retrying my book binding tomorrow (as it's 1.20am!) and hopefully will have a book as gorgeous as yours (I'm making both my mother and mother-in-law journals for Mother's day - the UK mother's day is in March)!!!

haha well i'm so glad that i could help you out!
good luck with the bookbinding, i'm sure both mothers (haha) will love them

i took the liberty of perusing your gallery, you have some beautiful little books made up! what method do you use to attatch your fabric to your hardboard covers?

peams In reply to lenoki [2009-03-06 22:45:20 +0000 UTC]

awwww thanks hun! I use a special glue tape for the fabric, it's as strong as glue but goes on like tape, so it doesn't mess up the fabric. It's great

ooh sounds great! i'll have to go hunt some down, i've been meaning to trial some fabric covers..
thankyou!

I absolutely love your tutorials =]
One question, though. I'm not a good explainer, so bear with me lol. When I glue the endsheets to the covers of the book and then try to flip the sigs back over, the endsheet usually slides over. In other words, when everythings all dry, I can never fully open the book. Am I making sense? lol. Please help if you could decipher my little predicament =]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenoki In reply to arelia-dawn [2009-02-08 11:15:54 +0000 UTC]

hmm... ok so i'm guessing what you mean is that the endsheets move closer to the edge of each of the cover pages so that the sigs are too tightly glued to the cover to open properly? so you can only open it like a quarter of the way or something? haha, i don't know if i'm making any more sense than you lol

if that's the case, you need to glue one side first, then let it dry fully before flipping it over and glueing the other. otherwise the wetness of the glue will allow for the endsheets to slide all over the place if you're not paying meticulous attention to the side you've just done while you're busy with the other. lol.. does that help? xD i don't know if you've tried that already, so let me know if you have and we'll see if we can brainstorm another solution!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arelia-dawn In reply to lenoki [2009-02-08 18:13:07 +0000 UTC]

It does! lol we're both bad at explaining, aren't we. But yeah, whenever I glue the endsheets, I guess I never have enough patience and I try to glue down both sides at the same time. I'll try letting it dry, though *finds something interesting to do in the meantime*--that'll probably do the trick.
haha thanks for helping so much =]

lol don't worry i'm the same. i'm way too impatient to do things the proper way, i always try cutting corners xD
but yeah, give it a go and... do it in front of the telly or something so you can at least watch something while you're waiting haha.

oh my god this would make the greatest xmas present EVER!! haha thanks so much, I will totally give it a try once I have some time on my hands.

how long does a book usually take, out of interest? O:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenoki In reply to theladymacbeth [2008-12-09 06:12:05 +0000 UTC]

good idea

this one took me about 3hrs.. but with alot of interruptions :B you'll actually find that if you make like 3 books at a time it will cut down your time heaps, because while you're waiting for one to dry you can work on the other.
we're lucky here in aus because the heat makes the glue dry faster so we don't have to wait around as long for things to set.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theladymacbeth In reply to lenoki [2008-12-09 06:15:53 +0000 UTC]

hey that's a good idea, switching from one book to another. especially if you're doing something like making them as gifts, then you can make lots in one batch! awesome.
yeah, though with the weather in melbourne the weather doesn't like to cooperate with anything you're planning to do haha.
I'll definitely have to try it out sometime soon though. <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theladymacbeth In reply to lenoki [2008-12-10 02:53:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah, we keep getting days which think they are going to be summery but then decide that no, they'll give us some nice rain instead. or days which are forecast at 30*, so we look forward to them ALL WEEK with the shorts hanging ready, only to be greeted with wind and rain on the day.
it just cannot make up its mind ):

And then comes the arduous task of page cutting
Unless you've somehow folded the pages to avoid that. In which I would then like to call you God xDDDD
And I love that cover paper. Its beautiful :U

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenoki In reply to LeaveMeAlone-NOW [2008-12-09 05:20:32 +0000 UTC]

page cutting? xD what do you mean??
haha i don't do anything else after the last step.. i'm done.

i know, it's really beautiful isn't it? it's a special hand printed japanese paper.. cost me $16 a sheet ;O;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LeaveMeAlone-NOW In reply to lenoki [2008-12-09 21:43:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, its where you cut the pages because they
re still folded in half...so at the top of the page you must use a knife and cut the crease and one page becomes two. But If you fold a paper only to make 4 sheets, then you wouldn't have to i suppose.

Wow $16 a SHEET?
;0; That's a lot; but it is hand printed. Lol. I usually use fabrics for the covers of my books anyways XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenoki In reply to LeaveMeAlone-NOW [2008-12-11 06:21:41 +0000 UTC]

...that is such a bizarre concept to me lol.
i leave them in little booklets..

i know, i almost cried D:
i've yet to give fabric a go, but i think i will..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LeaveMeAlone-NOW In reply to lenoki [2008-12-11 22:24:03 +0000 UTC]

Fabric is easy just make you sure you glue it to paper first ;D

Huh, I guess leaving the paper in booklets would be easy, but I've always cut them xDD
