Great tutorial! I successfully just made a custom journal to give to my sister using this. I printed off some
lined pages and put quotes and stuff on the pages for the actual book part...
and I cheated on the cover, I printed a picture I wanted as the cover onto sticker paper so I didn't have to glue it down... hehe, it was fun experiment, now I can say I've officially bound a book and I have an awesome Christmas gift.
Thankyou sooo much

hello,
great tutorial, but i have a question, why you dont did a gauze? or a headband?
im a book maker and you do a good job not take this 2 questions as offense..
sorry for my bad english..

that's just the way i was taught i don't use gauze because... it's not something that's 100% necessary, especially if you're at home and decide that you want to make a book without having to go out and buy certain materials. i make books out of whatever i have with me at the time.

UGH where WERE you 3 quarters ago in my life?!?!? We finished our projects by putting it into a book, i would have gotten fantastic points for making it myself, instead of dumb spiral binding at kinkos!
Oh well, these tutorials were well worth the DD!!! Nobody just explains this stuff anymore, lulz!!

This is such an awesome tutorial, thank you! I want to get started on making books right away.
One thing I find surprising, however, is that the signatures are bound to the cover solely with the end sheets. I scrutinized my factory-bound sketchbook, and it's the same! One thing that they do differently, and which I think I'm going to try, is that they use the first 2 pages in the first signature, and the last two pages of the last signature, as end sheets. I just think that way would be a lot sturdier, even though it wastes pages.

ahh yes i see what you mean. well, give it a shot and let me know how it works! i think that with the method i use, it just allows you to make your end sheets pretty by using different paper as opposed to the same paper used for the signatures

Wow! I've wondered if ever in my life I would learn how to make one of those and here you are! That's really great and I could get every indication, even though English is not my native language.
I just missed one thing. When you are finishing the 'sewing' of the pages, the inside of the last signature misses visible thread between the two midle holes; is that right? Or no? 'Cause I did a sketch of the movements of the needle so I could visualize it in order to make it properly and this piece of visible thread seems to be missing. How do I solve that?
Thanks for thisd great tutorial!

Poof! like magic
sorry for the late reply, you may have already worked it out on your own!
it's hard to visualise it without it being right infront of me, but i think that's right.. so long as you have been stitching back into the signature before, everything should be bound nicely together. the only signature that should look different on the inside is the very first one

The stiffer thing, is that what that girl peams up there was talking about? Probably should ask her...
And thank you so much for the advice.
Now, I had a favorite journal with little ribbons that tied it closed. They were like, in-between the cardboard and the extra paper at the top. I might like to try that.

no, it's a fabric that you can buy by the meter from any store that sells textiles. you would buy however much you needed to iron onto the back of your fabric (it should cover the whole surface- you can either cut it to size before you iron it on, or cut around the fabric afterwards).
or if you can find this tape stuff then try that out xD
either way, good luck, and let me know if the method you use works!

stumbled upon this, and I think it's really really neat! I must try it soon. You said in a comment that you hadn't tried fabric yet, have you since you wrote that? I have some scraps that I think would make a good spine, but not sure if I should try fabric covers my first time.
And do you think I can print out lined sheets or find them somewhere, for more even journaling?
Sorry for all the questions...
