Description el-oh-el, clicky-clicky teh preview!!!!111 8B

...Ugh...I need to wash my hands.

Based on the delightful comic (but not featuring the title character), but moreover based on the film-version's designs. A spin-off, if you will, featuring a young version of a prominent character. (Whoo, based on my youth-design for this guy, he apparently really let himself go.)

I was watching the movie and drawing, and this whole story formed in my head. I swear, I went on such a happy-craze and popped out these (in my humble opinion *coughcough*) charming and fantasmical storyboard-like drawings like a rabbit pops out kittens.

omg, teh best evar. i should try drawing this comic-style. o-yah.

Kudos to anyone who can guess the comic/movie and the character. Oh, and the girl is mine, so don't worry about her.

Flip, from Little Nemo!

You know, in the comics it says that he's only 17. He just looks older. So this could even be current Flip.

I think Flip IS young (he even said he's 21 once), even with a fat, chubby cherubic body and a cute, balding head! He was even shown a few times as a LITTLE BOY while at other times, he looks just like a paunchy middle-aged little cutie-pie, heh.

Little Nemo, right? I loved Flip and that giant bird of his. He really did let himself go... Maybe it was all the smoking?

Ahahaha...X). Yeah! *joins you*

Hmm, I have yet to figure that out myself, too, lol...But I guess an explanation could be that, during this one bit in the movie, I noticed that Flip's neck is green; so I was like, "That doesn't make sense, seeing how the lower half of his face is pale, but mmmkay." O_o...and I just decided to extend the greeness down to the upper half of his chest and then leave everything else 'normal.' (Lookit mah scraps for an example..oolala)

I think the green and orange stripe-things around his eyes are paint, because he's supposed to be a clown, right?...Or maybe, because he is a clown, he was born with that clowny coloration, or somethin'...<_<...(meh, that's the one I'll go with.)

LePipsqueak In reply to KiaraLPhoenix [2007-01-21 09:47:28 +0000 UTC]

So so so sorry for the late reply, KP-chan!

Yay! I'm so glad you recognized Flip, albeit a younger version of him! Ooh, and thank you for noting the 'quality' of the picture. It's really fun to create your own 'stills' for a 'movie'! And I'm glad you think it meets the standard!

Basically, 1) I scanned in a rough copy of a sketch I did (the really rough sketch done in non-photo blue with a dark tracing of the main, desired lines in black pen/pencil...) into AdobePhotoshop. (Although I didn't do it with this pic because I didn't know then, it's always good to scan your pictures at 300 or 400 dpi--doing so makes the scan larger and thusly allows you to get great quality once you make it smaller--but ALWAYS when you're done coloring and such!)

2) Then, I went to the little box that says 'Channels' and selected 'Blue', which gets rid of any remaining non-photo blue pencil. After doing so, go to 'Image-->Mode-->Grayscale', say yes to whatever pops up, then repeat same process, but this time do 'RGB'.

3) Adjust the Levels and Hue/Saturation to my liking...

4a) Duplicate the layer w/ the sketch on it, and switch that new, duplicated layer into 'Multiply'

5a) Create a (new set of) layer(s) between the two sketch layers, and commence coloring!

...OR...

4b) Create a new, transparent layer over the base sketch and trace over the sketch. After you're done, be sure to LOCK that layer with the symbol that looks like a small checkerboard...

5b) Then, create a new set of layers for coloring beneath the lineart...

6b) Once you're done coloring, you can go back to the lineart layer and, because it's locked, color in the lines with the corresponding color(s). Like, say, Flip's skin is olive green...I'd color the lines along that color a darker olive green. (I'm sure there's an easier way to color the lineart in a corresponding manner, but this is the only way I know so far, and it works! )

7) Beneath the layers of lineart and color (which you should hide now), draw and color the background.

8) And, as a finishing touch to give it that DVD/movie format feel (widescreen, lol), add two black bars of equal measure at the top and bottom of the picture, horizontally. You could also add some 'subtitles'...I've noticed they are usually yellow and italicized, so be sure to make your text as such!

9)(optional) When you save it as a JPEG, it may ask what quality you would like it to be...A range between 1-12. An 8 or so gives the image a fuzzy-ish, film-type look--in reality, the quality is lessened. But it sometimes makes for a more authentic screen-capture image.

And, VIOLA! A real film-still! (...from a non-existent movie, yaaaay! )

Well, I hope that helps KP-chan...It BETTER help or my poor, aching fingers have toiled and typed away for nothing!

Oh, and go watch "Little Nemo!"

*sheepish grin* Yeah, I SHOULD clear up my description; but you're initially supposed to GUESS who they are... Well, the boy, anyway. But I shall be nice and tell you.

Have you ever read/seen the comic/movie "Little Nemo--Adventures in Slumberland" by Winsor McKay? More than anything, you've probably seen the film-version. (I totally grew up w/ it!)

Anyway, that's a younger version of Flip, the clown who "just wants to have fun" and is considered, even a little by his own father, the Sun, as a social misfit. And the girl is of my own creation; she's King (or Prince, in this case) Morpheus' sister...I haven't come up with a name yet, blargh.

Sorry about the confusion, Anne! Hoped that cleared it up a bit.
