As is the case with most Japanese manga, something gets lost in the translation into English. The movie is almost incomprehensible if you haven't seen the series. There are several whacked notions in the series as well. One involves a recurring sight gag about cows and another is performed with shadow puppets. All of this came from the same woman who created "Sailor Moon".
