Description This is a scene from my novel 'God Killers', where the blind priestess, Kia, comes across a one-armed Sayer. It also featured in Glenn Fabry's Anatomy for Fantasy Artists book and the Lap of The Gods book published by Mamtor and Kymera.

This was painted in oils but finished digitally. Obviously it's very derivative of Frank Frazetta, but if you're going to learn from anybody, learn from the masters.

Very best,

Liam.

Was this originally the Jaguar God cover #6? Β The one Glenn Danzig wrote? It looks almost like the exact same poses and the trees are the same. Β It's a great piece, just noticed the similarity. Β I know you did both anyways.

Great book by my good friend Glenn Fabry. I think this appeared in Heavy Metal magazine - they ran a gallery of my work and a story in another issue. It was my favourite magazine in the early 1980s.

I was just curious is this is what a Sayer looks like and is that Aletha Rautha Meg? I am curious because I am kind of unsure as to just what the Sayers are supposed to look like. They sound like a kind of horned man-tigers, but I'm not sure where you were trying to go with them.

Happy holiday too Rubi.

yEah a Honour to have you in here !

Still learning Alot with you in everyways ...

( Alot sincerely ... and yu know i dont talk to please ever ... but comparing yu to Joe Jusko ... its - "its art" is the "top" ... but kinda in creative "tecnicaly" and mediuns vs Results speaking .. its all the same ... all the same style all the same mediuns ... all the same aspect ... no matter how gorgeous could the massive rendering times could be ... But sometimes is way heavy on deeply photoreferencing and takes the "more artistical" more dreamy more creative dinamic" right deep from your imagination "something that is only there in your head" "your deep mind visions" and not you or your watchers will ever see anyother plaçe .... cause it comed deeply from your "modeling" of every detail of that creation .... that just with free draw yu can ...
Now joe jusko ... for example besides a good drawer as well ... lacks of that "never seen" and completly the countrary ... its extreme heavy use of photo referencing ... and hiper realism with it .... "no matter how much" he renders and composites the plates ... no matter how traditional the work is ..
... The art ends the same as "matte painting" in digital and "photomanipulation" .. with that mixing some photo cuts very well choosed here and there, even take your own shoots in photo sessions with your own models ... then pick in photoshop and "paint over" .... ends in, as far as results.
It looses the artistical armony ... and that "out of this world" unique your vision that only comes from drawing - Without looking to a photo. ..
Looking to a photo or photo "plating" Yu will never achieve dynamic in your draw as same as for example having a real live subject in front of you and have to draw Not what is there "as a photo" ... but as your eyes 3dimensionaly see and your feelings sense .. then with all those senses gatered from the draw you have to make "completly mind buildup modeling as it was clay" geting the several aspects of what you sense its there in front of you out of it .... "not eye tracing" of something static ...

Well.. me and my almost wife we are trying to get with a secound studio .. were we basicaly work one time at year with he Artrenewal.org.. center ... were basicaly , i'n "her" assistant in that studio - oil painting, in the old flemish and finish way of artworks - were from her hands like from 6 to 12 in the very maximun Classic flemish artworks are made by year ... And every single picture from The umbra to Grissaile [link] ... get like i dont know 5 months to finish ... and not just with the classic 5 layers but up to 15 ... painting layers and stages from the first build ups or more that go tru each painting [link] ... and things that just before the 18 century were masters that would reaaly do it the right way ... cause well the revolution of classes after took over that most fine artcraft completly ...

And ( me exclusively that well i have my multimedia Engeniering degree ... my main tools that i were learning sinçe 15 years ago were Tecnological Modeling tru Amapy 3ds max maya ... More lately Zbrush mudbox etcs... and as that is basicaly my main field ... ) ... the more and more i go deep with my fiançe in Deep classic 14 century Classic Forgoten methods of painting and Artworking ... more and more i discover that Artworking as everything to do With "modeling" ... in all kinds of Mediuns ..

( Even to do Greath Ink Works ... You have to Model With Tones Give heights ... Build up from "heavy ink Sketch" then go cleaning ) But that ends reflecting in everything yu do in art ....

You have to Model from the very basic sketch the artwork "always" like it was clay in 3d yu were dealing ... "In The workspaçe of your mind conected to the medium" rotate , build up from every angles ... every single item ... And then only after that you can compose , also in a 3dimensional modeled way your composition items ...

And only if yu can do that and take your time to that ...
yu can make artworks with "soul" .... and with alot effort in that "model the scenes and every items from teh ground rotate in your mind that clay item and build up to the medium ...

you can not only Give the Deep As also the more "alive" "volume" expression to what yu are doing ...

that doing speed things ... and eye tracing ... or just placing flat fotos in a good composition and then render ... watever medium ... Will never get yu That notion of "alive volume" ... And then from it the So caled 3D or "live Illusion" ...
In what you are doing ...

There are few artist in the history that ever done that "reaaly well done" in its pieçes ... one of those "only" for me was no doubt "caravagio" [link] and not by what the critic "that only speculate" say ... cause yu need to "look to its art" but be able to do what he does ... to know how he does ... from the sketch modeling to the several layers tecnique ...
And then only after one of two years on oil painting "the most hard way" "with eye references ok ... "but no tracing no nothing ... Just your mind modeling and how you see ... expecificaly how yu see and how yu build up ...
Only yu taking the process the most painfull way yu start to understand the reality of the most important and the way tru the mind to medium process of doing things .... in art.
And thats just the light at the end of a very long dark tunel .

Yu start to see art diferently ... yu start to process art in your mind as a build up clay scene tridimensionaly ...
And thats just "the modeling" process ... the draw ...
Cause if we go then to thescene setup and " subShading" and "lightning riguing" there would be alot to talk about in the composition of those advances modeling and layering tecniques [link]

that only few years like 10 years ago? ... in modern Graphical computation we discovered and try to aply ... and right now its more easy to understand ... Well not so easy for graphical engeniers yes...

but the dam guys into the 14 century Were not only discovering but "aplying" already in Art masterpieçing ...
In the most Fine and hard Way there is tecnicaly ...

But just for example ... yu go to an .Artrenewal.org and the guys bable there that people as good as joejusko or bether with its art academy degree done bla bla ... are so good that can be considered the "new masters" ... and rewarded as that ...

But yu go to their Galleries ... comparing to the galleries of real old ones from 14 century vandick rubens to latter Boguereau dicksee ... And yu find out that Fotography And eye tracing ... sinçe fotography started to exist ...

Ruined art ... in its most Ancient "3d alive modeling" in everyways , the mind modeling into the medium ... No matter the medium.

--

Thats kinda what atracts me and what i like into your works ...
Yu can even use references ... and one experient artist eye sees were exactly ...

But its Most of All the "Mind clay modeling" that yu effort to do in every pieçe ... That make Reaaly greath watever yu do ...
Even if Are Speedies ...

And in All that yu never cease to atonish in watever time watever medium .

--

You are reaaly a greath atonishing artistical man that reaaly puts the "right value" in the amount you should.

--

Its reaaly greath to at least 20 years art experienced people - fell that see that - and learn more and more with all the right efforts that you do. That no matter the time yu have to....

Its atonishing ...
And a reaaly greath value in a artist all that ...
... that maibe not even yu dont have the right amount of time for contemplation to preceive that tecnical much ... but your deep pure efforts and love for the art in every lil single bit yu do ...
.. but is amazing how yu can so naturaly put all those qualities ... And so much so easely yu transmith all that ...
.. not Just to who gets close and deep all ways analizing your art ...
is there ...
And even kids that dont know nothing reaaly of what art is all about ... they can perceive that what art is about that yu got...... ) ...

Well ther it goes a year End Artistical review ...

.. now lets see what live in the most artistical efforted way ... as yet to gives my friend.

Well.. in everyways ( i hatte talking ) ... reaaly ... ( and i just talk because i fell that much ... and as i fell trully ... i prefer that my fells for god or bad at least try to nourish others evolution ... more than just my on - other wise would not be that much sense ... into just to keep it and let it faint in vain .. as live in veins ... everything even your live passes and just flashes in watever yu want or cant your own live is just a decay - in everyways - but what you do to others stay and become more and more .. the more time passes by ... ) Its just that ... ewhy even because not likeing to talk and not having reaaly No talent to talk at all... But that same so no sense to not output all those feelings ...

But not just ... with all them i'm reaaly trying to input and hard to put my tesis about "Wounderfull art No matter what"! ...
In a Way That could Even kill gods ...

And believe me that will come "with time" for ya ... to get yu...
As watever i say stays and last long ... most because in everymoment i just put my live in everyword ... in every feeling.

Soo... Lets hope to ...
See us Exactly on Christmas Day With a bunch of gifs !
lets see ...
Talk is easy ...
And live is harder than never ...

but...
When Things Get Tough; The Tough Get toughter.

Cheers again Rubi.

I'll keep doing my best, and I have to say - I completely share your love for Caravaggio and the classical artists of that time. Amazing. I did a few nude paintings using that classical technique years back. Very effective. The way the light comes through the thin layers of paint. I wish I still had them, I've no idea where they went now. Man, I miss oil painting...

Take care,

Liam.
