Description
Well now. SPOILERS. In fact, if you're looking at this, it's possibly a bit late but, if you don't want to know anything about Victory of the Daleks, GO BACK YOU MAD FOOLS, GO BACK!!!*Ahem* Anyway, I was on the whole impressed by it, even if it did gallop along a touch too fast. The Dalek’s plan was sound and their needing the Doctor's help was wonderfully reasoned. And the new Daleks were certainly impressive, with some wonderful (intentional or otherwise) nods to Ron Turner's art on the Dalek Chronicles. However...I have three problems with said new Daleks.
The first is that they look hunch-backed. This is not a little be due to some bright spark's idea to cover the back panel of the skirt with a ruddy great support pillar with vents on. This is something I’ve noticed happening a lot in fan redesigns and I personally loathe to see it on anything that isn't a special weapons Dalek. In fact, I dislike any design that cuts the Dalek bumps down from the requisite 56. In story, if they are sensors, then that would leave them with a blind spot. Out of story, I just don’t think it looks right. All this said, on subsequent watching, I am getting used to it so we’ll have to see how it goes.
The second is the neck/ring section. It looks like a compost bin. And you can SEE STRAIGHT THROUGH IT. Granted, this only happens a couple of times but would it have killed them to put a bit of gauze or something around inside there? The above models take these two complaints and run with them. It’s effectively my attempt to bolt aspects of the new design onto a more traditional (and, admittedly, smaller) model, since it’s long been my ambition to apply some features of Turner’s wonderfully stylised Daleks to an actual model and this is as good an excuse as any.
But the third problem is the worst and will sorely test my endurance if it remains. It’s one of the greatest crimes against the image of the Daleks since the comedy routines of The Chase. It is an almost unforgivable sin. You see, last night, the world bore witness to the unimaginable horrors that were the Bright Orange Dalek and the Marigold Yellow Dalek.
I exaggerate, of course. But while I am (as a glance at my gallery will show) a lover of multi-coloured Daleks, there are limits. I’m not talking about going beyond so hallowed ‘black, red, blue, grey, gold’ spectrum of acceptable Dalek colours ‘cause they already did that with the rather spiffing bronze scheme we’ve had for the last five years and that worked wonderfully. What I’m talking about is the sudden absence of the very definitely metal feel that the UK’s favourite pepper-pots have been sporting of late. Suddenly we’re back to flat, matte colours and it leaves a design that is bigger, bolder and heavier than even the bolted and riveted RTD era one looking decidedly plastic. And that would be fine, I suppose, if it weren’t for the colours. You see, it kind of works on the White, Blue and Red versions. A bit of texturing and a metallic zing would go a long way, of course, but what the heck. Bonded polycarbide doesn’t sound like a metal anyway.
Except then we have Orange Zest and the Sunflower Kid and it all falls apart. If it had been a decent gold and copper, we’d have been fine, I think. But Orange and Yellow – *bright* yellow – do not look threatening. They’re cheery, friendly colours, nice, happy colours, in short, colours no self-respecting Dalek should be seen dead in. They look, as a friend of mine pointed out, like sweets.
Which is all a rather long winded way of saying that, when it came to deciding on colours for the above picture, I decided to stick with metallic hues. I hope that, while still striking, they can at least hold their eyestorks high, confident that they do not look like they could be undone with a craft knife and a glue-gun.
*Phew*
Rant over. Enjoy the picture. It’s sort of WIP but hopefully there’ll be more of this design to show off soon.

Do you think white would have been a more suitable colour for the Scientist Daleks, because Scientists mostly wear white clothing in experiments, and Black would have been a more suitable colour for the Supreme Dalek? Because some Commander Dalek incarnations in the past did have that colour.

Sorry for the delay in replying!
What I ended up doing as I developed this version of the NDP for my (hopefully one day continued) Dalek Chronicles was using black as a command colour within the different castes, ala the Black Daleks of Evil of the Daleks. That way, I could show rank distinctions while keeping the Supreme as something above all the different castes.
Also, I rather like white for supreme command - it ties back to the Emperor in Evil.

I see. By the way, I read in a Doctor Who book that the Eternal Dalek's yellow colour, mixed with it's black spheres are supposed to represent some kind of danger pattern like this thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/black-… .

They are the Daleks, even if they dont look scary, they are still space nazies. Beisdes, no one would say the daleks were scary if they are exterminated
But i have to agree. They look like kid friendly toys. But of the new dalek pardigm, one of them is one of the most dangerous. The scientists designs weapons for the daleks. However i dont know what the eternal does

Allegedly, the Eternal would be something similar to the Cult of Skaro, i.e. ensuring the survival of the Daleks, ensuring extinction never happens again.

I feel like if the teem that designed the new daleks for victory of the daleks could have made them same gold color but with the new paradigm design. I think the fans would except the new daleks more if that was the case.

To me, it wasnt the look of the Daleks that was intimidating, they look like harmless pepper and salt shakers. No, it was the personality of them. So much hate, so much anger and need to kill. Like Nazies in space, wanting to kill all but the master race, the Dalek. And even after The Doctor commited genocide on them, they still managed to come back. And this time bigger.

I don't mind the shape or the colour. Its just the texture that bothers me. They're too smooth and shiney, and it makes them look more like the plastic models they are instead of sturdy killing machines.

I love these big guys. They're still pure Dalek, but are so unique with the names and stunning colors, which helps make for a more children-friendly audience approach, and all have very intimidating new voices and eyestalks. The drones,(the red 'uns), are my fav, because a bright crimson seems befitting for a Dalek, as well as decorative. Which one do you like? (AWESOME PIC, BTW )

Why do you think of the revamped version in Asylum? They didn't do much to show them off but they were now in gorgeous dark metallic colours (well the red an blue are) and the hump was severely reduced. They still have to grill - which I personally like, I feel the back panel has always been the weakest spot- but the atrocious hump back has been reduced as much as physically possible.
I THINK they put some gauze over the neck bin as well. God that was a cock up, you could see the drivers heads!

Oh, the colours are a complete improvement, no question. I think if they had been presented in that lovely metallic sheen to begin with, I would have been much happier with them. And yes, the reduced hump definitely helps. But they're still...off. They don't have the lovely tapering silhouette that the Time War Daleks perfected. It's not just the hump, it's the front, with the straight up skirt and then the bulging middle....it just looks...off to me.

A lot of what Moffit has done I have not been a fan of, in fact before the 50th was announced I had stopped watching it and only caught up to watch the 50th and I must admit the re-design of the Daleks was probably one of the worst decisions he made alone with that first redesign of the Tardis.
Great work on the models.

Thanks.
I'm personally a big fan of a lot of the stuff in the 'Moffat Era' - I know it's not to everyone's taste and I have a fair idea why, but I tend to enjoy it considerably more than the 'RTD Era'. I'm even quite fond of the first console room - the scatty look suited the 11th's character at the start.
But those Daleks....nah uh. As a big fan of the Dalek Chronicles and Ron Turner's art, I can completely get behind some of the underlying ideas bu the execution just looks bad, especially next to the exceedingly well done Time War Daleks.

Majestic-MSFC In reply to Librarian-bot [2013-12-08 23:48:34 +0000 UTC]
Yeah the idea was sound, bringing back pure Daleks rather than the Time War scavengers but as you say the execution could have been done much better.
I'm more of a RTD era fan, 10th Doctor was my Doctor though I did enjoy the 9th Doctor some of the Peter Davidsion/Sylvester McCoy era as well (watched them growing up). I am however very positive about the new Doctor in the upcoming Christmas special I just have a positive feeling about him, something I never got from Matt Smith. He did eventually grow on me but unlike his two predecessors who I enjoyed from the get go. I think there were just too many drastic changes from the get go with Matt Smiths beginning (New Doctor, Tardis, Tardis interior, companion, sonic screwdriver) it felt more like a reboot rather than a true continuation, something the series didn't need. It was unavoidable with the Doctor and Companion and I think the other changes should have been done gradually over the course of a couple of seasons.
I do like the interior of the Tardis as it stands now, though I miss the falling apart 9th/10th Tardis, it just had the feeling of the last of the Timelords in an old rust bucket kind of look which I think fitted the situation he was in unlike before Gallfrey disappeared/got stuck in the Time war.

There's absolutely no reason you shouldn't like the yellow Dalek! I simply don't think it's a very Daleky colour...although frankly, who here would argue with a Dalek if it wanted to go around in marigold yellow...?
And do feel free to use the same colours as me - I lay no claim to them, after all! All are based on previous Dalek schemes, from many different sources. I can give you a break down on what they're based on if you want, though I imagine you'll be able to figure it all out!

I hate the new ones with a passion, but I love your new color-coding idea. I, too, thought up my own hierarchy for the fanfic I'm writing:
Bronze= Drone
Bronze w/ Red detail= Squad Leader
Grey = Special Weapons
Silver w/ Blue detail- Technicians/Scientists
White w/ Bronze detail = Emperor's guard
Black w/ Gold detail = Emperor
The Emperor, by the way, sports some structural differences to its minions. I'll be posting the initial schematics on my page as soon as I get this darn scanner to work.

Candy Dalek ~ <3
Oh wait. 3
I do agree with your rant, really. I'm relatively new to the series, so all my Dalek impressions are quite fresh. My biggest issue with the new ones is mostly the color - they now look like some cheap plastic knockoff, rather than a sturdy metallic deathmachine. Sure, they still are, but they don't have the accompanying sense of dread as the old ones did.
Great picture though, the metallic hues look great!
