I always thought the little lights under the dome were a sensor belt. The Special Weapons Dalek is probably mute and can only take orders because it's a special-purpose unit. It blurs the boundaries between infantry and light artillery, being so heavily armed and armored. At any rate, they should have had one of these babies in the Season 4 finale.

SWDs do speak. The most recent episode they appeared in was "The Witch's Familiar."

Actually, those "little lights" are what the SWD has in place of the eyestalk.

All very good points! In the novelisation of Remembrance of the Daleks, the SWD actually takes command of the Imperial Assault Squad when the leader is destroyed. I think it communicates via their internal network, though...

Always loved the description of the Special Weapons Dalek in the novelisation of "Remembrance of the Daleks"..."They called it The Abomination.."

That was a brilliant book all round...and yes, the idea that it was 'derranged' and a further mutation was a very good notion.

These sort of SWDs didn't and don't have eyestorks, since they tend to get put at the front of the charge and it'd get blown off. I guess they must use either some other form of visual sensor or they just work with non-visual targeting systems. Which makes sense if you're blowing the heck out of something and creating a lot of smoke!
