Description
Dalek drone: New Dalek ParadigmDesigned during the final days of the Time War, its schematics placed inside the Progenitor Devices scattered throughout the cosmos, this advanced casing represents a new paradigm in Dalek technology. Seamless and self-maintaining to a degree far beyond previous iterations, equipped with exponentially more powerful weaponry, and incorporating massively improved sensor and power systems, it was to safe-guard the future of the Dalek race - a function that has begun with the creation of the first five template units in orbit around 20th century Earth...
---
Well, this is it. The New Paradigm drone, as redesigned by yours truly. It's pretty much done, though I reserve the right to tinker with the colours and textures on all my models without prior notification - I'm a perfectionist, perceived imperfections make me twitchy!
[EDIT (13-11-12): UPDATED WITH BETTER EYE]
The Daleks were created by Terry Nation and Ray Cusick. The New Paradigm was created by Steven Moffat, Peter Mckinstry and Mark Gatiss. Doctor Who belongs to the BBC. This model was created in Blender, by me. Help! was written by the Beatles. Oranges are not the only fruit.

I'm afraid not. I really dislike the proportions so I don't have any inclination to model the canon version. Sorry!

Just curious, if you ran the show and put this design in "Victory of the Daleks" would you have returned to the Bronze Daleks, like Moffat and the real show did, or would you have kept theΒ Paradigm designΒ more prominently since you improved it?

In all honesty, I'm not sure. I suspect a lot of the problems with the actual NDP Daleks is that the props are so massive and unwieldy, never mind the aesthetics of things. I cannot honestly say whether my design would function better or not.
If it did, then I, personally, would have chosen to make the change stick. Obviously, there would still be budget constraints that might make that impractical but I think it would have worked storywise as a break with the Time War, even more so with the memory-wipe aspect of Asylum of the Daleks (something that there was unfortunately not enough time for the team to explore before Matt Smith's departure). It would have been nice to give the Time War Daleks a last hurrah in Day of the Doctor and then moved forward with a post-Time War paradigm.
Ah well. What might have been and all that.

Y'know, looking at this again I s'pose I DO rather like it better than I did before; I still think you should make the neck rings SLIGHTLY thinner; not as much as previous models, but just enough to make the head more noticeable again.

Does this model still have some means of exchanging weaponry?

I'm afraid not. I didn't build that in because I wanted to keep the shoulder swivel functionality from the Time War version and I really don't like it when Daleks are missing hemis on their panels.

You don't necessarily have to have it in the back; I actually devised a new mechanism that is located in the side panels; it doesn't interfere in any way with the true Dalek design or the swivel capability, but it still allows weaponry to be deployed. Apparently, it would work, but it would also require part of the midsection to slide back as well. I'll try to get diagrams if I can.

A perfect balance between the original time war drone design and the new one, I personally think both are awesome but the new ones seem more imposing on my opinion so I prefer those.

Peter McKinstry, and anyone else who helped develop the 2010 redesign, really could learn from your design you have here on Deviant Art, cos it is so much better then McKinstry's.
The 2 major issues I have with the real Paradigm's, apart from the fact they are too damn tall and that god awful neck section under the domes, is that they have a good awful design added on their backs for some feature we may or may not ever see in use in future stories featuring them, which is ment to open up and reveal new weapons and other such devices [rather like that Imperial Probe Droid from 'The Empire Stirkes Back' I should imagine]. It's great that your design does not include it, unless it was for a new generation of Special Weapons Gunner Dalek then that would probably be ok.
The other thing I don't like about the real Paradigm design is the camera eye itself is too big [so much for the late Sidney Newman not wanting 'bug eyed monsters' which is exactly what the Paradigm Daleks seem to be], your design has it just as it should be.
They should make use of your design one day. Maybe they could combine your design with my colour scheme for the Paradigm Daleks [link]

Huh. This actually isn't half bad. Are you sure it's the same model as the other one I saw? I swear the neck rings are different (I keep obsessing about those, don't I?)
Mind you, the eye should be a more vivid colour than washed-out blue-white, but on the whole this looks pretty good!

Librarian-bot In reply to Anglophile1138 [2012-10-25 23:20:01 +0000 UTC]
It's absolutely the same model! As I said, perspective is like that...
I've been wondering about that eye, actually. I used the same material as I did for the Time War Dalek, which is also a little paler than it perhaps should be. Do you think a more vivid blue would work?

Anglophile1138 In reply to Librarian-bot [2012-10-26 00:03:59 +0000 UTC]
Definitely. Or yellow, so that it looks like an NPD.

Librarian-bot In reply to Anglophile1138 [2012-10-27 20:51:44 +0000 UTC]
While I originally used yellow, I'd rather not now, since I didn't follow the organic eye route and I want continuity with the Time War lot. I will definitely be trying a vivid blue though.

Aww...missing their hunch back design.
Which actually doesn't look that bad in person. If you actually see one of the Paradigm Daleks in reality their size and the hunch-backedness kinda works. It's just on screen it doesn't translate very well.
But your design is very bold, very solid. Better than the deep red Drone.
The colour scheme is good, it's sort of Dalek camouflage dark greys the shell is an almost ashen green sort of colour.
The Paradigm Daleks would likely state and then exterminate you if you argued with them that orange is not a fruit but the colour of the Scientist Dalek.

Librarian-bot In reply to tangerinewarning [2012-09-21 16:01:56 +0000 UTC]
Interesting about the not-translating-well-to-screen thing. It would explain how everyone in the production team could be enthusiastic about them, despite the eventual fan-base reaction...
I do like that they've improved the transition between the rear panel/vent thing and the shoulders now...looks much better in my opinion.
Glad you like my take on it! As for being chased down by a horde of angry Orange Daleks, I'm sure I'll cope. They can fight it out with the pink Mechonoids.

-oh, the color scheme is a PERFECT grade of blue/grey metal tones. Perfect. And as much as I thought I liked the bevelled panels for the sensors, I can see how doing away with that improves things vastly.
Bronze, you don't say..? I can't see it... but I am going to trust you on this!
Best,

Librarian-bot In reply to Mal170582 [2012-09-17 12:21:50 +0000 UTC]
Well, when I say taking it towards the bronze, I really just mean re-introducing some red to balance out the blue.
The 'lower neck ring' is part of the shoulders, an extra rim on top of the central bands. Just to break up the middle section a bit. As for the clearance on the rings themselves - I always took the mesh to be ventilation rather than audio reception, so I'm not too concerned by that, especially with the high efficiency that an advance Dalek casing would have.
I might do other angles at some point - I did consider it but decided to hold off for now. I shall probably get round to it eventually though!

Mal170582 [2012-09-16 03:57:48 +0000 UTC]
-this is... cool... and strange... and cool... as a Dalek should be.
Erm... is that lower neck ring a neck ring, or a seam in the midsection?
Personally I'd have the neckrings a fraction (a FRACTION) skinnier, so the grill gets more soundwave access (I always figured that part was how the dalek listens and picks up other info), but this thing looks like a sleek yet very nasty machine... Also... its so high tech I'd do away with the grill and just have something textured, like the Imperial Daleks had. But all very, very minor points.
Any chance of other angles or bird's eye shots?
Awesome work! I think Mckinstry is breathing easier, as are we all!
