Description Red Drones? I don't think so. And in the absense of 'pilot' in this new scheme of things, this seemed an appropriate designation.

Terry Nation created the Daleks.

Your paradigm dales look a lot more solid than the flimsy plastic idea daleks that Moffat helped to design. Thos Blender renders really set a tone-and in your picture "Cusick's Legacy", they look especially intimidating. To be honest, I never really liked the original 2010 design. Your's are much better.

He's redesigned them, including rearranging the colours. In his world, the drones are grey and scientists blue.

They're Dalek Officers now. The red ones.

I always saw these ones as Squad Leaders of the small bronze ones.

Well, as discussed above (I think it's here), I chose to go with grey for the drones - just a bit of traditionalism on my part, really. Plus which, red doesn't seem quite as serious as gunmetal grey for the soldiers.

So I guess Moffat's red ones are Dalek Officers now. Brass are more Dalek Infantry in my mind, but I guess that equates to Drones. Just the fact the brass ones rank even below the Drones shows what the Third Dalek Empire (first is Classic era one, second is Medusa Cascade) thinks of them, and I find that amusing for a number of reasons.

I still have to wonder if you could've tried keeping the colours the same and have the Scientist be orange, but just a dimmer and more metallic shade (which the Drone/Officer and the Strategist acquired for Asylum). And if you did try that, post up the results in Scraps or something.

Red is an awesome colour and I agree that it is too good for just drones.
But, to quote the 9th Doctor, "to the rest of the universe, red's camp. So much confusion, all those red alerts, all that dancing."
Camp daleks... that's a new one.

Those are the official colours. I juggled them around a bit for my versions, based on various other extended universe sources, mainly the old 'Dalek Chronicles' strip.

Just a matter of personal preference, really. I don't like orange or bright yellow as Dalek colours and I prefered grey for the Drones.

I'm waiting for someone to complain that you haven't made these Daleks weirdly hunchbacked with a very obvious blob escape hatch on the back too. Oh well.

Librarian-bot In reply to Kasterborous [2011-10-12 21:20:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, well. I wouldn't listen to them. That hunch really is the problem. I've got one of the Red Dalek action figures and if you took away that back strut with the vent...it might actually look three quarters of the way good.

The hunch is my only problem with the new daleks, other than that I consider them excellent so I like your removing of it.

I really like the look of it. The shade of red seems more intimidating and looks more metallic-ish then the Drone/Red Daleks looked in the episode, which is nice.

I totally agree that RED is not suitable for ordinary drones. The traditional pattern has been for lower ranks to be more bland looking with higher ranks having black, red or gold livery to really draw the eye and differentiate them. The new Red Drones on the telly divert attention from the more subdued blue and white catses, it's really counter-intuitive to my way of thinking.

Red for a COMMANDER of drones, though, more than acceptable. In fact, I'd go so far as to say completely appropriate. Red is coded as warlike and agressive in Western societies, it's associated with the British military, it conjures up Japan's 'Rising Sun' wartime flag, the Communist flags of the world or the Nazi banner. It's a militant, imperialist sort of colour, and so it suits the Daleks well.

Yeah...for myself, I just think it's too damn bright. Not horrendously so but, as you say, the troopers should be bland and uniform, with the commanders standing out.

As far as Doctor Who canon is concerned there's thus far only been two red Daleks. The first ever was the Supreme One from Stolen Earth/Journey's End. The Red Drone is the second. Red has been used in the past in non-canon or questionable canon sources, but that shouldn't be taken into account.

And... maybe the Red Drone will simply be a commanding drone. There was only 5 Daleks, each one representing the new castes.

Yeah, that's the case, based on Moffat's assertion that the NPDs are just an officer class. Thank God.

I find it unfortunate really, and I hope that he didn't just cave to close minded fans who're pissed about minor design changes. I also gave my two cents on a rectification between the entire armies of new design Daleks in City of the Daleks and The Only Good Dalek (the modern spin-offs are generally considered canon from what I've seen and usually tie into the TV show better) and the more mixed variety in Asylum and Moffat's statement.

I said that after City and over the course of the New Dalek Wars seen in TOGD the Daleks decided that it was too much of a resource drain to make the larger, more advanced new casings and it would be more logical to return to the older, simpler designs to serve as the footsoldiers and cannon fodder.

Yes red drones, like silver drones with blue bumps. Again, Steven Moffat said the red ones are drones, he runs things, so the drones are indeed red. The strategist is orange,

Really beginning to regret not expanding on those comments now. My instinctive reaction to the drones being red as 'No!' is purely down to the fact that red has designated higher Dalek ranks since it was first used in the Dr Who and the Daleks movie. Oh and a sort of feeling that Dalek drones should be far more subdued in colour.

Yeah, I agree. I always associate red with the elite, like the Palpatine's Royal Guards in the Star Wars franchise.
