Hello everyone. Sorry for the delay in uploading something new - this was actually supposed to go up on Friday but I sort of got distracted by building a walking house out of Lego and completely forgot.I have been meaning to build a proper Dalek hoverbout for a while. And in this case at least, I do mean hoverbout, not trans-solar disc. This is supposed to be the first iteration of the device, so I've tried to tailor it to be as close to the first appearance in TV21's Dalek Chronicles, while adding in things like air-breathing vents to suggest something a little more primitive than the later, interstellar versions.
I'm pretty happy with how it's come out - hopefully it will lead to a series of matching accessories for my various Dalek models. I do plan on doing 'Empire' and 'Expansion' versions, as those have both appeared (for definite) in various spin-off fiction.
Daleks belong to the Terry Nation estate, not quite sure who owns hoverbouts....

Fantastic.
I think David Whitaker came up with the majority of 'The Dalek Chronicles' (the name of the collection of those TV 21 Dalek comics).
I really wish these or the transsolar discs made an appearance in the new series. The new Daleks are pretty ungainly to be flying around maybe they need something like a hoverbout to help them around.

Thanks - and yeah, we owe a heck of a lot of Dalek lore to David Whitaker.
And I think trans-solar discs *have*, very briefly, shown up already - kinda. In the mass crowd scenes in 'The Stolen Earth', I've always thought I've seen some sort of 'forklift truck' in the style of a hoverbout.
Of course I may be imagining that....

I just wish the BBC would dump all the new daleks and do a story with the old daleks. I mean, why not? I don't like the daleks of today having shields, the ability to fly... the methods of defeating them get less credible to more the daleks themselves become less credible.

Oh yes. I even have a copy of the 'Enemy of the Daleks' trade paperback now, so I have all the necessary references. I do like the look of those things, as a sort armoured up hoverbout.

Have to admit, hoverbouts do seem quite irrelevant now that Daleks can fly, but there is a line in Blood of the Daleks which suggests that the travel machines can only go so far...

True, they seem a little pointless for aerial combat (and hey, it makes sense that they'd move on from external to internal flight capability) which is why I'm not sure whether I'll build them for the Time War Daleks onwards.
Having said that, I do wonder whether it would make sense for a casing alone to be able to travel between star systems, as the Dalek Empire series shows trans-solar discs being able to....

That would all depend on the type of propulsion system, and the energy they use - I can't see that casing being able to store that much, but if its reusable/recyclable, it might work....

Primitive Daleks had obvious constraints on power and mobility, so it makes sense for them to use vehicles to travel further and faster with less effort than they could by themselves.

Absolutely, especially for these Daleks, who are only just getting past picking their energy up from the floor. And even when mobility improves, it does make sense to use a booster.

I'm curious as to how later iterations of Daleks recharge themselves and how long their power cells last. Also, how they provide the necessary nutrients and waste extraction for the mutant's own biological processes.

I've thought and speculated:
The first non-floor-dependant Daleks could hover up to a meter off a surface, by firing exhaust out of the main travel unit in the casing. These Daleks used solar energy, as the slats were super-efficient solar panels. Daleks also had a battery that could power a unit for up to 3 months. They could move in space due to the exhaust thruster.
Later Daleks began using generators using radioactive materials. These contributed to further mutations in the Dalek mutant. The slats were retooled into radiation exhausts in the event of a reactor breach. They had a gravity repulsor unit to allow them to fly up to 8 meters off the ground. Daleks would become dangerously unstable above 5 meters. These units were almost crippled in space, where they had to depend on the radiation exhaust from their slats to move.
Time War Daleks could outright fly, in the atmosphere or space, via an advanced thruster unit. They were powered by background radiation, with the slats collecting that.
Paradigm Daleks simply had a heavy reactor. This improved reliability. They retained the thruster unit.

All of them have nutrient juice tanks and waste tanks that converted waste into gas which was vented.
