--
Scott had walked for a long time with his deer companion by his side. The deer had tried to direct Scott in a direction toward help but it was as though the dire was in a trance. The Tokota seemed oblivious to the deer’s presence and the changing climate.
They had started in Anirniit valley but now found themselves in the snow-covered Taniya Mountains. Marking Scott’s path was a long trail of blood. The human had done his damage – shooting the dire twice – but had not escaped alive. After the human was dealt with, Scott had tried licking his wounds to clean them and stop the bleeding but as time had gone on he’d stopped. Blood caked his fur, matting it together. He didn’t stop to drink or eat or rest. It had made keeping up hard for the deer that is, until Scott finally collapsed.
Low hanging snow clouds obscured the landscape, making their location feel even more isolated than before. The deer tried encouraging Scott to his paws but was only met with growls. The dire had no intentions of moving despite how desperately he needed healing. His companion fretted with concern but understood.
The deer lay beside the dire and looked back at the blood-spattered snow. He had lost so much and the wound was in a dangerous spot. The amount of blood made the deer think that it was a vital organ – he’d seen it many times when humans hunted his herd.
He looked back to the dire. Scott’s eyes were still open but empty – devoid of will or coherent thought. Only the puffs of air occasionally emitting from his nostrils showed he had any life in him at all.
The deer wasn’t sure how much time had passed but snow began to fall from the grey abyss around them. Still even as it began to stick and pile up in Scott’s fur he remained where he was. The blood had dwindled to the thinnest of trickles – hardly noticeable at all – but he seemed worse for wear. His companion was keenly aware of the lost warmth. There was some but normally the deer would find himself content even in this cold weather but now he shivered.
He tried once more to nudge Scott to his feet but he didn’t budge – didn’t even make a sound. Rising to his hooves, he moved to stand in front of the dire. The Tokota’s gaze remained fixated on something far beyond the deer’s vision – perhaps even the afterlife.
Scott heaved a sigh then closed his eyes. The deer made a distressed noise, touching his own small nose to the dire’s large one in hopes of a response – even if it were a nip of annoyance – but to no avail.
The deer stumbled back to the dire’s side, flopping back down in the snow. He’d stay with Scott until the end – even if it would be his end. All he could do now was look to the sky and pray that Aippaq did not plan for this to be the dire’s time to go.
