A long, lone howl broke the eerie silence of dawn and signaled to the slumbering Tokotas that a new day had arrived. The piebald male loosed another howl, steam rising from his mouth, before he turned his attention to the others. He was ready to leave.

The night had seen some change in the human's status. As the temperature had dropped further, she'd awoken enough to snuggle closer to the wild female's side for warmth to which the female had curled tighter around her. Now she had loosened her curl but the human remained at her side. Soon the wild female would set off again but only after she saw the handler safely on the black half mane's back.
