I think she compressed the clouds to the point where they could hold them.

Ya, or else she doesn't need to spin around the cloud at that speed and just move the cloud there instead.

Meh, all the important ponies are fine! I mean... um... she could still sonic rainboom to catch four ponies, right? >_>
Also, Rarity's head as a cloud is now canon.

Since they were planning on getting out of the balloon to give Rainbow the care package, it stands to reason that Twilight had already cast the walk-on-cloud spell before they took off. That's the only reasonable explanation at least!
Doesn't explain why they never mentioned it, and how Rainbow Dash knew that her method would work.
(I don't entirely believe that excuse either. But that kind of messup comes almost inevitably with an expanding continuity. Trekkies probably know what I'm talking about!)

Yeah, at this point everyone is kind of justifying it, but it really was a silly thing to throw in there. I don't see why they always have to have Dash doing all the saving; there were plenty of pegasi there to catch them, just like in Sonic Rainboom. I found it all a bit forced, especially Fluttershy forgetting to fly like that.

Silfir In reply to MillennialDan [2012-12-16 15:31:57 +0000 UTC]
Fluttershy "forgetting" to fly in moments of panic is actually an established quirk of hers, for instance in Dragonshy. I had more trouble with the care package subplot itself - it served the singular purpose of getting the rest of the group in the balloon just in time to have to be saved. I had less trouble with Dash doing the saving - she is established as much quicker to react in a crisis than most - than with who had to be saved. It would've been much simpler and less far-fetched to have her save unconscious pegasi from the Academy instead. It would also have saved the time the episode spent on the excuse to get the balloon filled with mane cast up there.
Rainbow Dash needed the chance to shine at the end - I think the time for the Wonderbolts to shine would be in another epic two-parter against an airborne threat, maybe holding the line against a griffin assault or a hurricane while the mane cast deals with the source.

I doubt that will ever happen, so I am left wishing to see just one lousy episode where the Wonderbolts aren't completely useless. I'm tired of seeing Dash-to-the-rescue, especially at times where it just isn't necessary. That kind of solo act heroism is the territory of Mary-Sue fan fiction, and I can't help but feel annoyed by it.
As for Dragonshy, I have often pointed out to others that there was an overriding phobia at play there. It hardly counts as typical behavior. I could accept that she would be temporarily dizzied by the tornado, but at some point in that free-fall she would be able to snap out of it.

Silfir In reply to MillennialDan [2012-12-17 02:40:40 +0000 UTC]
A Mary-Sue is a character depicted without any flaws whatsoever. Rainbow Dash, however, has plenty of flaws, and they're depicted throughout the show. Even her desire to become a Wonderbolt can drive her to wrong actions; she did let herself become involved in creating the tornado.
But while a character without flaws is not interesting, surely no one would prefer a character without strengths. And if Rainbow has shown one particular strength of hers time and time again - it's that she will always, always react quickly when her friends or others are in immediate danger. Letting her do that to close out this episode had two purposes: Giving her a chance to be the actual hero in the only Rainbow Dash episode of the season (This is Friendship is Magic, not The Adventures of the Wonderbolts, after all) and making her realize that keeping others safe was, in fact, more important to her than becoming a Wonderbolt at all costs.
As for Fluttershy: Imagine yourself in her position, tumbling through the air, with her friends screaming at her side - what makes you say with that kind of determination that she "would" be able to snap out of it? I found it perfectly understandable that she wasn't. Where was the "overriding phobia" when Fluttershy had to escape from the hydra, and what evidence do you have that something like that was the cause, especially given the recent evidence to the contrary?

There is such a thing as the Bystander Effect - [link] - in real life; summarized in a single sentence, it says that the greater the number of bystanders present during an emergency situation, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. Both this time and (especially) the accident in Sonic Rainboom are pretty good examples of the Bystander Effect in the show, in my humble opinion.

However it's explained, I still think it's getting a little old. The Wonderbolts have never done anything useful; not even once. It would be nice to see them prove they're good for something for a change.

That's what I thought when I saw the episode at first. Now, I'm thinking it's either that, or Twilight decided to cast the Cloudwalking spell on all of them in preparation (they may not have known what the Academy would be like - for all they knew, it could have been Cloudsdale on a smaller scale).

Watch it again, or read the script.
"Here it is! A spell that will allow Earth ponies to fly for three days. Ooh, it looks really difficult... I'm not sure I can do it. "
"I found a spell that makes temporary wings, but it was too difficult to do more than once. So I found an easier spell that lets the rest of us walk on clouds. "

brian577 In reply to McGack [2012-12-17 05:11:29 +0000 UTC]
How? It's not like the spell gives non pegasi permanent wings. Twilight never stated the spell wasn't permanent. There is no reason why it can't be.

McGack In reply to brian577 [2012-12-17 17:39:14 +0000 UTC]
why would she have needed to cast the spell in sonic rainboom then? why not have everyone do it at birth so no ponies need bother worrying about falling through clouds? why arent there any non pegsai shown anywhere in cloudsdale? surely two or three out of thousands of ponies would love to live in the clouds even if they dont have wings
what spells have we seen that have had a permanent effect other than ones that transform the subject?
and then if the spell had been permanent why did rainbow compact the clouds so tightly together to catch them and then shoot them all back upwards if she knew the cloud walking spell was permanent the cloud wouldve just caught them

Rarity was probably given the cloud walking spell so she could stay in Cloudsdale and not be confined to the balloon for the remainder of the visit.

pikalax1 In reply to ISkyArt [2012-12-16 02:55:16 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. And when the wings burned off, Rarity couldn't walk on clouds. So for the love of continuity, the only reason the could could have saved her is that it was so condensed, it was practically a floating mass of snow.

I thought that at first, but I figured that either a) Dash made the cloud dense enough to bounce the girls (notice now the cloud goes poof afterwards) or b) Twi had the foresight to cast the cloudwalking spell. Either way, good comic.
