I looked at the first one to see the parts. But now I'm trying to try it on my own art... and I'm very, very confused. @_@ It's just not going smoothly...

My pen tool also has a mind of it's own. I click and drag, the first one's fine, but when I do the second one, it goes cruvy all on its own! O.o
How do I fix that?

I'm not the author, but I know how to fix your problem. AFter the first line, hold alt while having the pen tool selected. a triangle with a line missing should appear next to the pen. click the second dot while holding alt. after that, your next line should come out straight.

Check the top left of your Options toolbar, you should see 3 options,Solid,Wireframe and something like a combination, wireframe dislpay + solid color insid. Choose the Wireframe only mode, that should solve it.
